Details: The server took too long to respond. (The operation has timed out)
We have an existing ESX3 environment with vcentre server 2 managing.
I have built 3rd ESX server ESX4, and installed vcentre server 4.
when trying to connect to the new vcentre server i get the above error.
I can telnet the ESH host, can connect direct to it using the Vshere client
Any information please is gretly appreciated.
Thanks
Hi,
can you ping your vcenter server with the ip oder dnsname properly?
Is it located on the same VLAN as you ESX hosts?
MCP, VCP
i can ping the server via IP address and DNS name.
it is an existing server that is used for other applications.
vlan is correct as well.
i can rdp to the server
Okay, so far so good.
You vcenter services is also running?
What other apps are running in the vcenter server?
And it is recommended to have a dedicated vcenter server with no other apps installed on it.
MCP, VCP
the other app is a management application.
being dedicated is not going to happen. this is the server we are going to use.
our exisiting VCenter server isn't dedicated and it is working fine
cheers
and yes, vcenter server services are running
Are the existing hosts also running under the "new" vcenter?
MCP, VCP
i currently only have 1 new host which is ESX4.
i can use vspher client on my vcentre server to connect direct to server.
i cannot use the vsphere client on my local machine to connect to the vcenter server, nor the vshpere client on the vcenter server to connect to itself
Have you checked out he logfiles on the vcenter?
Have you tried out to connect to vcenter with ip-adress and dns-name?
MCP, VCP
which log file is the best to decipher?
whether i connect via IP or DNS makes no difference, same error
"the server took too long to respond"

I have seen this before when running other apps on the same box as vCenter. It can be down to your app using ports that vCenter uses or IIS.
Does your management app have a website, does it run using IIS?
If so, disable the website within IIS admin and restart the vCenter server service, then try connecting, check the ports it uses and if possible uninstall it so vCenter has a dedicated box.
If you do want to run other apps on it, you can install vCenter with different ports but then you need to enter that port into the client when connecting and is a bit messy. If it is the IIS then you maybe need to separate them.
Let me know if this helps,
Dan
when i did the installation i chose different ports for the HTTP and HTTPs connections.
i have been trying to connect with the servername:http port
i just tried with the https port and it is now working..
When you connect without specifying a port it defaults to 443, so unless you change the 'require a secure connection' option you would need to use the HTTPS port you specified.
Glad its working for you.
Dan
