question about io on capacity planner

Hi there,

I just had a quick question about one of the readings in a capacity plan.

In section 4.1 - source systems it lists each physical servers Disk I/O (trans/sec) and I/O (MB/sec) - see attachment.

We are looking at sizing equallogic SANs and they all refer to IOPS - is this the same as "Disk I/O (trans/sec)?

Thanks,

Huw

Yes, it should be the same. IOPS refers to I/O Operations per Second. It represents the sum of all read and write I/O operations. In Windows Perfmon that would be the "Disk Transfers/sec" counter.

It's important to understand your peak and average IOPS for the environment. That will help you know whether or not your EqualLogic SAN is capable of handling the I/O demands of your servers.

Lanamark Suite has a Storage Design Module that can help you size virtual disks, determine the optimal number of VMFS data stores, optimize the size of LUNs, etc... It also enables you to include storage components (e.g. storage arrays and SAN switches) from leading vendors in solutions.
