DNS Name Resolution using a bridged network connection not working

I'm using VMWare workstaion V7 on Windows 7 64bit. If I set up a guest to use a bridged connection name resolution fails. The guest receives a proper DHCP reservation with the proper DNS entry and I can ping the DNS server. I did a Wireshark trace and can see a DNS request go out the wire to the correct DNS server address but never see a response back. I've tried disabling W7 firewall and that didn't help. OpenSuse 11.1 and Windows XP guests fail the same way.. NAT works fine. Any ideas how to troubleshoot this issue further? Thanks

After a bit more thinking I decided to do a wireshark trace on the host side. The trace showed no DNS requests from the guest. I have Shew Soft VPN client installed and noticed it has a DNS Proxy service that was running even though I wasn't using VPN. I turned off the Shew Soft DNS Proxy and tried another nslookup from the guest and viola it worked. Hope this helps someone else out..

Hello,

I had exactly the same issue : VMWareWorkstation on Windows 7 64 bits Bridge and DNS not working from the VMs.... and ShrewSoft VPN DNS Proxy activated !

Stoped ShrewSoft VPN DNS service (apparently this doesn't hurt my VPN connection) and DNS is back in the Bridged VMs !http://communities.vmware.com/message/1535282/%21!

Many thanks to the courageous that did the investigation and analysis

The defect is registered at ShrewSoft :

Thank you from myself as well. I haven't used Shrew for a long time (as I now use OpenVPN mostly), but of course its DNS service was running and after spotting the issue with bridged network in VMPlayer + spending a really long time playing with iptables finally I got to this thread. Thanks again!

I also wish to thank you, I spent 5 hours banging my head against this.  I had installed then uninstalled shrewsoft because I didn't like it.  The Shrew soft lightweight filter service remained in the NIC propperties (damn you uninstall).  Again thank you!!!!

Thank you very much. I think I would not have found this myself. I tried everything, checked everything, and the stangest of it al was that my DNS worked while in NAT mode, but not in bridged mode. However, what I still don't understand is, why does the installation on the *host* (laptop) of the Shrew Soft VPN client only frustrate DNS for the *client* (running in VMware Player) and not for the host itself?

Anyway, I did not get Shrew Soft VPN client to work with my Fritz!box 7390. While this works with an iOS client...

Thanks to the other contributors, I've found that in my case here the issue was due to an security application installed to access Internet Banking. Once uninstalled it, DNS started resolving names again!! Thank you guys!
