Windows 7 XP Mode and VMWare Workstation

I am running VMWare Workstation 6.5.3 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. So far I have had no issues, however today I installed XP Mode on my Windows 7 host OS to run an application that is not supported in Windows 7.

I have tried running the application in VMWare but it is dreadfully slow even after allocating 3GB of RAM and two cores to the Guest OS that it was barely usable. After running the application that I want to use in XP mode I am no longer able to start any Guest OS's in VMWare workstation. I get an error message that is shown in the attached file.

I have tried shutting down the Virtual PC running XP Mode, but I can not start any Guest OS's in VMWare until I restart my PC.

I have read on other discussion forums that Virtual PC locks the hardware virtualization causing the issue with VMWare.

Is there a fix for this (Aside from the obvious of not using XP Mode)?

This issue has been addressed in Workstation 7. I'm afraid that there is no workaround for Workstation 6.5.3.

When you tried running the application under VMware Workstation, did you try changing the preferred execution mode to VT-x (or to VT-x/EPT if you have a Core i7/Core i5/Core i3)? That might improve your performance.

Thank you for your response. I tried changing the preferred execution mode to VT-x. I am running a Intel Core 2 Extreme and it didn't make any difference.

I have since upgraded to VMWare Workstation 7. Just doing that the VM Image runs significantly faster. But the best part is that I can use XP Mode and VMWare at the same time.
