Hello,
I have an HP Integrity rx6600 server that has Dual-core Intel® Itanium® processor. My question is will I be able to install VMWare ESXi 4 in HP Integrity rx6600 server. Have checked the VMWare Hardware Compatibility List but have not found either HP integrity server listed nor Intel Itanium processor.
Is it that VMWare ESXi 4 is not been supported by Intel Itanium processor?
Looking forward for some information
regards,
Nikhil
ESX(i) is x86 x86_64 only
You cannot use ESX / ESXi on Itanium.

Why is Intel Itanium processor not supporting ESX/ESXi? OR why can't we use ESX/ESXi on Itanium?
Nikhil
Is a different type of architercture.
The x86 and x64 are quite "similar", but ia64 is too much different.
For the same reason some software does not exist for Itanium, or must work with a x86 emulation.
Andre
VMware virtualizes only x86 hardware not IA32/64. Thats how it is designed. Strictly it will not work on Itanium based hardwares.

Please award points, if helpful
The simple reason it is not on vmware's hit-list is that it has a server market share of something like 0.5% and a questionable future.
Please award points to any useful answer.
Today I was looking for new servers for myself, I also took a look at the CPU archs support. Here what was written here in year 2003:
The only problem with ESX supporting Itanium is that in reality your "guest" VM's would also have to be "itanium only - 64bit".
It is worth to note that Hyper-V does not support thisarchitecture. It seems that Xen is the only tool to make virtualization here. What can be done with Itanium: - I was looking for the documents for my thesis and found this one. Maybe it will give you the idea on how to charge your Itanium with useful work.
