Are you happy with the PCoIP performance in your P20?

You that are running Wyse P20 clients, what do you think about the PCoIP performance?

I got five of them up and running in my View 4 environment, I've tested both XP and 7 desktops and I must say that the performance is awful!

It's nothing even remotely related to what we saw on the videos before it was released.

I know Wyse is coming out with firmware 3.1 soon but I haven't seen any list of what's addressed, does anyone know?

The performance issues aside I also are having connection problems, sometimes it looses the connection during log on and takes the user back to the first log on screen. This never happens on my V10L's...

I was hoping P20 with PCoIP would give the end user a better experience, but as it is today I sorry to say it doesn't. I really hope Wyse will address these issues soon.

Hi ZyBeR,

I haven't tried the P20 yet from WYSE, but these portal devices are pretty much all the same. They all use the Teradici CPU/GPU and the firmware is actually from Teradici and not from WYSE (just so you are aware). I don't have details on the 3.1, but I know it will supposedly resolve some issues with audio loss on flash video.

I am testing a NC240 from Samsung and I am not having any major problems with performance. Can you please elaborate on what you are seeing in your environment? How is it performing awfully? What programs are not working correctly? How is your VM/Linked Clone setup (Memory, CPU)?

There are going to be limitations with this technology, but it will continue to improve over time. This is the first version of PCoIP in VMWare View, so it is only going to get better with major releases.

I should be getting a P20 sometime this week from Wyse. I'll let you know how it goes. I had some problems initially with the video performance even on a full Windows XP.

Try these:

Change to the VMware SVGA II driver

Cranking up the resolution and number of monitors in the pool definition from the View admin will increase the video RAM. This has alot to do with video performance.

There are some threads about editing the VMX file to crank up the Video RAM as well.

We have been extremely happy with our P20's.

Outside of the Agent bug that we have had and getting the P20's to hook to the Connection Server, they have been flawless and performance has been far more than acceptable. Users are reporting productivity has increased dramatically and our Power Users are loving the fact the bottle neck is at the Server and Storage, not the local workstation.

Cheers!

I have to agree with AGratefulDad. Our experience with the Wyse P20 has been excellent. We were also using V10Ls prior to the P20. As such, I suspect that there may be something in your environment or configuration that's causing this problem rather than the device. Have you checked the Diagnostics page on the device? Can you post the data? Have you tried any other PCoIP hardware devices?

I am using a XPe thin client now and redirecting printers, how have you guys addressed printing with a zero client like the P20? Group Policy, Preferences, a third party solution?

Thanks!

That's part of what makes them 'zero' clients - there's no need for printer redirection since the client doesn't see printers. Printers are simply mapped to the VM just as if it were a physical PC. No change in printer management required.

We have 1 pool that services a couple different locations that have different printers. I guess what I was asking is how people map the printers to the VM.

Trust me it's not your P20, its your VM. I guaran-damn-t it. Smiley Happy

I've got just about every Teradici client you can find including the P20 running and they all perform well, so long as your VM is setup correctly, read my review it shows some of the issues I had and how I fixed them:

If you have the perfect VM then you can still increase the speed of your thin client. I learned this from a guy at Teradici, log into the Web Interface of the client itself and remove the AES-128-GEM encryption. This cleans up a bit of the screen dragging issues I've seen.

Here is an example.

I just got a P20 eval from Wyse today. Got it hooked up and was up and running in less than 5 minutes. PERFECT!!! Exactly what I'm looking for in zero client.

Three issues so far:

1) Flash video is out of sync with the audio. The video is actually about 1/2 second ahead of the sound. Other than that, I'm impressed. Haven't been able to figure this one outyet.

2) USB 1.1? Seriously? Come on Terradici.. USB 1.1? USB 2.0 was widespread a LONG time ago. This may be a deal breaker for us.

3) I can redirect a USB flash drive and my iPod , but an external USB hard drive won't show up. Haven't figured this out yet either.

What version of View are you on, 4.0 or 4.0.1? I am having problems with audio and flash, in that there is a second of audio loss every 15 seconds or so. Teradici told me that it should be fixed in 4.0.1 and or with their 3.1 firmware that is soon to be released. Not sure if anyone else is having problems with flash and audio with their Teradici PCoIP Portals/Clients.

They are using USB 1.1 because of the bandwhich limitations, USB 2.0 would require way more bandwhich to support.

Not sure why your USB hard drive wouldn't work. Only thing that comes to mind is GP settings that would block it.

We are using View 4.01.

As for GP, there shouldn't be anything blocking it that I'm aware of. As a University (Academic Freedom) we restrict very little (unfortunate for support costs).

I can understand the bandwidth issues to a point, but I would think they would be able to throttle the USB connections. 50Mb USB is better than 11Mb. Besides, they suppport 1Gb connections. Why limit the USB connections?

Hmm, not sure then. I will try a USB based hard drive tomorrow with my FX100 to see if it is PCoIP/View related or not.

I can't speak for Teradici, and one of their people will probably chime in on this, but I would venture to guess it is because PCoIP was created for remote workstation access that supported high latency WANs. They probably just had to settle for 1.1 because of this constraint. Just a guess though.

I have spoken with Teradici on the USB 1.1 issue and they told me its a combination of bandwidth and reliability. TCP/IP is designed for packets to go missing, USB isn't. So when you start pushing a lot more data through the pipe you start having issues of corruption. Given their larger concern is bandwidth.

So if USB 2.0 over a switched network environment ends up being an option for us, do you know of any devices that support PCoIP and USB 2.0?

That's a loaded question. Smiley Happy

IF something that doesn't exists, exists, what devices would be supported to run on it. Smiley Happy

My answer is: the devices that would run on this system would be the devices that are supported once this exists. Smiley Happy

For sure all of the PCoIP Zero Clients are using USB 1.1 as they are using the Teradici Chip. I am not sure what USB speed a WES/XPe/Linux client will use if the USB is 2.0 on that device and using PCoIP in the View Client.

Our biggest thing would be flash drives for our students. I can't say for sure how much they're used, but I can see them complaining about how long it takes to transfer files back and forth between the flash drives and their network folders over the PCoIP clients.

The other use I would look at would be external CDROMS. We want to do computer lab replacements with some type of VDI. So far, I think View and a Zero client gives us the most bang for the buck. If instructors/students need to copy things from an instructional CD, then USB 1.1 is going to be painfully slow. We may have to set some policies (not necessarily a bad thing) regarding this type of thing. This just may force us into those policies for instruction labs.

Word on the street is that VDI Blaster is trying to use the internal CD Rom and make it show up in the VM (probably as an external). YOu still have your USB issues, but you have to figure they'll get to 2.0 eventually.

We were testing a P20 and ended up purchasing ten of them to start expanding our View 4 testing.

The ONLY issue we have had is complaints about people typing and the screen very rarely seeming to not keep up with it so they have to pause and wait for what they typed to "catch up".

Everything else has been great so in all likelihood we hope to fully implement View to all our service level employees.

I would be very curious to hear if anyone else has seen anything similar to what I described.

Thanks.
