ESX & Fibre attached Tape Drives (that old chestnut)

I haven’t visited this subject in a while but would be interested to know if vmware have made any progress on the subject... does ESX3.5 or ESX4 support fibre attached tape drives ?

We use HP Data protector agents on the ESX servers to backup the VMFS LUNS over the LAN (NIC assigned to the service console) approximately 4TB. Every other flavour of unix, linux & as crazy as it sounds windows supports backup over fibre attached tape drives why doest vmware ESX.

I have spent considerable time looking at implementing VCB (v1.5) but ran into serious performance bottlenecks because of the limitation in MSDOS.

In order for us to work within the daily backup window I had to use 3 VCB proxy servers. (backup window = VCB backup to disk + backup to tape). It was not possible to, backup to disk then backup to tape with one VCB proxy server....
