Problems testing VMware View 4.0

I am testing an evaluation version of VMware View 4, and require some assistance with a few problems I am having in getting the software to work.

The problems are:

- Using vSphere Client 4.0 to manage the ESX server, the “VMs and Templates” feature is missing from the Inventory menu.

- After creating a Windows XP VM on the ESX server, I am not able to create a template from the VM.

- Using View Administrator, there are no Desktop Sources, and I am not able to create any desktops, or add any users or groups, even though I have connected to the VirtualCenter Server and View Server in the Configuration section.

I have installed and configured the following:

- ESX 4.0

- VMware vCenter with View Composer on a Windows 2003 server,

- View Connection Server on another Windows 2003 server,

- A Windows XP VM with View agent on the ESX server

- vSphere client 4 on my PC

The problems I am experiencing are similar to the following thread:

the difference in my case is that I have installed vCenter and View Connection Server?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It seems that you are connecting directly to the ESX-server and not to the vCenter.

The desktop sources will be populated when you have setup your pools properly in the View Manager.

Thanks for your suggestion Linjo, but it doesnt help me.

View Manager is connected to the View Connection Server, it cant connect to the ESX Server.

Once you connect you configure it to connect to the vCenter Server, from there you collect all the Desktop Sources.

For some reason my View Manager will not display any Desktop Sources.

I understand that you need to install the View Agent on all the VMs that you want to use as desktop sources, which I have done, but still no luck.

Thanks Warren

Well, the View Manager and the View Connection Server is the same thing.

In your first post you mentioned the "vSphere Client" and that is something completly separate.

The desktop sources will NOT be populated until setting up pools or individual desktops.

I suggest you read thru the "View 4 Deployment Guide", that should guide you in the right direction with a step-by-step approach:

Hi Warren,

Please can you confirm that you are connecting to the vCenter server and not the vSphere host. It sounds like you are connecting to the vSphere host directly and not to the vCenter server itself.

If you connect to the vCenter server directly you will get many more options that if you connect to a host.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi Warren,

Have you been through and created 'Pools' for the vm's and also added the enttitlement to access the vm's. If you have not done this then you will not be able to access the vm through the View Client from your desktop.

This is done through the View Manager website and is pretty much where everything is configured for your View deployments.

Thanks Linjo,

In fact your first suggestion was actually correct.

So please excuse me for my ignorance, this is my first attempt at setting up a VMware system.

Initially the vSpere Client was connected to the ESX server in order to setup my VMs.

So I just assumed vSphere stays connected to ESX.

But after thinking about your 1st suggestion I decided to try connecting the vSphere Clint to the vCenter Server, and 'allah', everything started working.

In hindsight I should have read the vSphere Client's initial logon message, it asks you to enter the vCenter Server's IP Address.

So once again, thanks for your help.

Regards Warren
