Q. Has anybody installed windows 7 as guest using the physical partition?

looks like you have a notebook with a single disk only ?
then you will probably run into issues with Grub - other than that it should work - but I do not know how Windows 7 will behave when you try to boot it once native once as a VM ...

Yes is a notebook with a single disk. I have not had problem with grub that I can see. I had that setup under XP and the solution was to have 2 different hardware profiles using the console, one for direct access and the other one for VM.
1. I have not been able to figure out how to setup hardware profiles under win 7 yet.
2. I plan to access win7 ONLY from the VM side so it should not be a problem.
My concern is that the ThinkPads come with a "tailored" version of win7 optimize for the hardware so it is not a generic win7 therefore I may not be able to use it under VM with different hardware.
BTW are you using windwos 7 as guest?

Hardware Profiles was removed in Vista and not added back in 7 so you're out of luck looking for the XP style hardware profiles.

Make a Ghost Image (or similar) before you mess things up.
