We are currently running esxi 3.5 Foundation with local storage with 6 physical ports on two nics. This server will be upgraded to esxi 4.0 advanced. Our new server is Esxi 4.0 Advanced with 8 ports on two nic's. We have a purchased an EMC NX4 SAN. I have read several articles about some best practices. Do both servers need to be configured with the same network assignments or can i take advantage of the two additional ports on the new server? What is the most common network configuration with a 6 port and 8 port servers? Which is better or is it best to do both as far as the VMFS/NFS data stores? Does the datastore you select change the design of the network? We will be connecting the servers and the san to two separate HP Layer 3 switches.
Thanks,
Michael

I suggest to use a different physical network for the SAN part (if you plan to use the NFS head).
But why do not use the FC part? And use the NAS part as a NAS for your users?
