Unable to install VMware tools in Win7 guest - connecting to update server (with no response)

Hi. I am running XP, win brand new install of VMWare player installed today and a Windows 7 virtual machine (guest). When I click the VM menu on player and select "Install VMWare Tools...", the computer takes a few seconds, then opens a dialog box titled "Downloads" and the message within is "VMWare Player is connecting to the update server ..." and an activity bar (see below ) just keeps going across. It could stay there indefinitely. Is this an issue with Windows 7 security? Or something else.

I would love to get this working so that I could copy and paste across guest and host computers, but if not... I'll just have to give up on Player and install 7 directly.

Easiest way get to the log in a win xp vmware player:

Repeat ALL steps to get reported problem (dialog box titled "Downloads" stay there indefinitely)

1. Navigate to MenuBar -> Help -> click on 'About VMware Player'

2. At 'Additional information' section copy "UI log file:" path

3. Paste it to Start->Run.

- Are you on wired or wireless connection?

- Are you using proxy?

- Are you connected to Internet and can browse?

- Are you log as User with ''Administrative' privileges?

thanks for the reply. I uninstalled player and then installed workstation with tools eval to get tools into virtual machine using the included .iso.

Then I uninstalled workstation and reinstalled player. But of course, if I select "reinstall tools" it does the same thing.

It occurs on a wired and wireless connection.

I am not using a proxy.

I can get to internet on both guest and host.

I have admin priviledges.

I'm having the same problem too, any updates to this problem yet? I can't install VMware Player Tools on Win7 and also Ubuntu 9.10 guest OSes.

Hi,

had a similar issue here. Solved doing these steps:

1. In Windows Firewall, grant access to VMWare player to public Internet

2. In VMWare Player Preferences, use the option "No Proxy"

3. Restart VMWare Player,

Well I guess I am not alone then. Maybe because since WIn7 is a bit new OS, it could be some sort of compatibility issue with VMware and it should be fixed on their end and we can't do anything about it yet. We just have to wait for further updates. Too bad..

I have the same issue but even worse.

I have two Ubuntu guests and either one of them cannot be updated. I get the same error multiple times as well as a crash that starts like this:

Then of course VMWare Workstation shuts down. Automatic updates and manual updates both cause this issue.

Just to add to the thread. I am also having issues downloading and installing the tools. This is into a Linux guest.

My log looks similar to the one earlier in the thread.

This happens for me too (player 4.0.1)

It finally worked after a reboot or two and running the player in admin mode and..

I also downloaded the package manually and placed in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Player\vmware-tools

Package 4.0.1 url is:

https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/4.0.1/528992/windows/packages/tools-linux-8...

Note: trying to browse to folders in the above URLs gives “file not found” only

This is linux version of tools, but you should be able to change to suit your situation.

I am not sure what specifically worked though!

Such a pain!  VMware should sort this out!

Either wait a couple of days for the location where Player downloads the files from is working.  Or, download Workstation and extract the tools installer files and run each manually, to extract the 6 iso images and put them in the Player folder (I just did this myself this morning).
