Hi
Running Ubuntu 9.10 64bit with VMWare 7 desktop. When loading vmware complains about 3d graphic driver. Icons on the screen can be started but once started looses focus. Cannot use START Programs either to shut down. In using lspci Ubuntu displays ATI Radeon 2100.
Can anyone help?

Have you installed the VMware Tools inside your Windows 7 virtual guest?

Hi
Yes VMware tools are installed. I have reloaded Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit as the host OS but have not tried creating a new Windows guest. Sometimes the tray icons are active.
Frustrating

I have exactly same issue. Ubuntu 9.10 64bit + VMWare 7 + XP Guest.
But I think this is a GNOME/GTK/Ubuntu bug because somtimes the native firefox produce a similar behaviour. The cursor stuck on hand icon, and firefox doesn't responds any mouse clicks. In general Alt+tab (on host) solves this focus problem.
Another interesting focus problem is (host: Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit + vmware7):
1. start up an XP guest (with vmware tools) then login
2. On vmware 7 menu, click View->Downloads
3. the challange: try close this dialog.
(a possible solution is: switch to Home tab, then you can get focus on this dialog)
Hi
Thank you for your reply. As this was a new PC I was building which
gave me this problem and did not have anything on it, I changed to
Opensuse 11.2 I use both Ubuntu and Opensuse so it was not a big deal.
Opensuse is working fine with the same configuration. I still have a
feeling that it has something to do with graphic driver in VMWare. Even
on Opensuse it complained about 3D and that it would be disabled.
Thanks for taking the time to respond

Hi,
By saying “When loading vmware complains about 3d graphic driver.” did you mean a message something like “3D acceleration has been disabled..” or “3D acceleration not supported by the host..” something like this which is shown when virtual machine boots ?
This message might be due to the absence of video driver in the host which is required for 3D acceleration.
Have you activated any proprietary video drivers in your system?
In Ubuntu host, go to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers.
Under Hardware Drivers menu, Ubuntu will show the list of drivers to activate.
If one is available, you may have to activate it (requires connection to the internet) in order to enable 3D acceleration on the host as well as inside VMware Workstation.
Let me know if you are facing the problem after trying this.
