Another "VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vmx)"

I was running three VMs in Workstation 7 when the host machine Windows 7 Pro 64-bit blue screened. I got that problem fixed and then went about accessing VMware. I was able to get 2 of the 3 machines up, but the third machine was totally locked. I couldn't shut it down or suspend it and couldn't restart Workstation, so I killed and restarted workstation.

At first, I thought I could get the machine up again by taking ownership of it. That didn't work. Googled and a VMware support document recommended manually deleting the .lck files and restarting workstation. Alas, that didn't work either and I got the nastygram referenced in the subject line of this thread. I'm attaching the latest log file for this VM, but I'm holding out little hope of a recovery. Still, you never know.

could you tell me how you fixed the vmx86.sys - reboot - problem with Win7 ?

I use Win7 Home Premium as host system and have the same problem with WinXP - guests !

Interestingly enough, rolling back to a snapshot didn't really work, but both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 have on-board recovery mechanisms that, when you boot into them, perform the repair. I actually got the third, misbehaving VM to recover that way, so as of now, all three of my VMs are up and running. I took snapshots of their current condition, just in case, but assuming my Windows 7 host doesn't puke again, I'm good to go.

I don't think my "solution" would work on Windows XP guests for the reasons I just stated. The recovery of the VMs had little to do with the host and everything to do with the guests. In other words, I got lucky.

try to comment out this line in your vmx-file

vmci0.present = TRUE

then try again

tryed it out - no effect.

Even a VM without OS installed forces Win7 64 into the Bluescreen.

I use a new ASUA notebook with AMD CPU and Win7 64 !!! HOME !!! Premium, OEM-preinstalled !

Might the HOME Edition be the course of the problem ?

MS Virtual PC f.e. is not supported by MS on Win 7 Home Edition . . .

I see - try if disabling VM-USBarbitrator service prevents those crashs.
