Monitoring HBA I/O -- Urgent

Hi All,

i have implemented VM solution for my company , and here is a brief details

a) ESX server

b) SAN

c) HBA controller

on ESX server i have hosted VM instances ( winodws OS ) , Disks for these VM are

placed on SAN and this ESX server is connected to a HBA. This HBA takes the I/O

to the SAN then to respective disk and vice versa.

Now everything works fine and i have to monitor this solution.

i understand that VM's uses the physical resources of ESX server such as memory,

network , processor etc... And i am planning to monitor

a) ESX I/O

b) HBA I /O

Are there any utilities from VMWare which i can use to monitor HBA I/O , from the earlier threads i see that there are no VMware API available to monitor hba I/O Also please do let me know available utilities which can monitor HBA I/O in the market Please suggest me as i am hitting iceberg .

Sainathss,

You might want to take a peek at the VMware CIM SDK (SMI-S for storage management) I believe there is some level of storage management capability that you are looking for there.

I asked our SDK Dev Support team to see if they can lend a hand..

I also found a FAQ our Dev Support Team put together (needs some updating) http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-7275

Hi ,

Thank you very much for your reply . I was going through one of the case study and they are using IOMETER as a benchmark tool for measuring the I/O for HBA.

Question

Are there any tools available to monitor HBA I/O ? in the market

Can i rely on IOMETER for analyzing the data ?

Please take a look at the link

Hi Sainathss,

You can refer to the Storage System Performance Analysis with Iometer as mentioned in http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-3961 which also includes a Disclaimer (When Not To Trust Iometer).

Hope the information proves helpful.

You may find this thread useful, http://communities.vmware.com/thread/204749;jsessionid=CF010623BB5E26D90BA85F54E66EFA80 ,which directs on using esxtop to monitor the I/O.

I dont know whether i can use IOMeter for live monitoring of I/O
