I downloaded the appliance using bit torrent and imported using VI3 Datastore browser but I cannot get the machine to start.

What are the steps to run this appliance on the VI3 platform. I have tried all sorts of steps from using VM Converter to import the machine to WINSCP and also Datastore Browsing.

VM Converter will not import.

Datastore Browser will import but only while connected to the ESX Host directly via VI CLient but it does not start the appliance. I get ESX unrecoverable errors Unexpected Signal 11.

I m running ESX 3.01 with all the latest patches. It is a standalone host not in a cluster.

Any assistance is gretaly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Two minutes after I posted the last message I successfully imported the appliance to the ESX Host and it does attempt to start but I get the following error:

Error loading operating system

Again, any help is greatly appreciated.

I am trying to get this up and running to do some testing and it is not working. I've got the VM installed and configured as per the instructions. I downloaded and installed Pidgin (was GAIM) and there is not Jabber listed under protocol. So I downloaded Psi and I set it up as show but the program just sits and spins after I click Register.

I've checked DNS and that works.

I've checked the log on the JabberIM server and it shows a connection opening from my client IP but then nothing.

Any ideas?

I deleted the VM and downloaded the torrent again. Then re-setup the VM. Now it works!!!

Seems like bittorrent is no good for this VMA. I've been connected for 15 minutes and I've downloaded 24.6kb so far. There's no other way to host this anywhere else?

The appliance is missing from the download site: this gives a 404 error...

I too have a simmilar setup and I am unable to get the GuestOS to function appropriately. I am hosting the Operating System on an ESX 3.0.1 server. When i go to inspect the disk, it causes the VIC to crash and burn. Very strange issue. What is the recommended/tested and verified VMware host setup for this appliance?

Issue resolved. The best way to get this virtual appliance imported properly is to use VMware Converter.

Settings:

  • Source Type: Other

  • Virtual Machine: Share out the folder in windows, allow everyone full permissions, and type the destination as
    server\folder\<vmwareappliance>.vmx

  • Destination: Desired VMware Server

Worked fine after I used converter (version 3.0.3).

mu-conferencing for jabber would be a good addition to this project. Is there a way to get it onto this appliance. One issue i am having right now is the unavailability of the 'make' command in the distribution of the appliance.

I have the same issue - ie we want to enable the conferencing component but have no idea how. Looked at the instructions but the make command doesn't even work (not found). I have no Linux skills so any sort of help here would be great?

Ok Quart... I'm KIND OF almost there. I had some time recently to revisit this subject and I've made some headway.

Ok first thing, the VMware appliance is a slackware 10.1 or 10.2 box. Knowing that, I realized that there is an installpkg command. After figuring that out, I went to packages.slackware.com and browsed for the packages I needed to get MU-Conference working. They are as follows:

  • automake-1.9.5-noarch-1.tgz

  • kernel-headers-2.6.13-i386-1.tgz

  • binutils-2.15.92.0.2-i486-3.tgz

  • libidn-1.5-i486-1.tgz

  • bison-1.875d-i486-1.tgz

  • make-3.80-i386-1.tgz

  • expat-1.95.8-i486-1.tgz

  • gcc-4.2.3-i486-1.tgz

  • gcc-g++-4.2.3-i486-1.tgz

  • pkg-config-0.23-i486-2.tgz

  • glib2-2.6.6-i486-1.tgz

  • rpm-4.2.1-i486-3.tgz

  • glibc-2.3.5-i486-6_slack10.2.tgz

I downloaded all of these files then, used ftp to transfer them over to the Slack box. I recommend you download 10.2 distribution version package files for everything unless you cannot find 10.2 distribution versions. Use the latest when there isn't any 10.2 distributions. I worked with several people to figure out all the packages I would need so I didn't just guess and check.

Once all of those are installed you should be good to configure MU-Conference. Like I said before, I can get the MU-Conference component to turn on, but I must be missing something because the group chat feature still isn't available. You may be able to make more headway then I as I don't have much time to troubleshoot atm. Hope this helps.

Bittorrent isn't allowed by many corp firewalls. Any reason why we can't put up the whole file?
