GUI for Storage Vmotion (svmotion)

Hi, please find a little Windows GUI for svmotion.

Instructions:

Install the VMWARE remote CLI (www.vmware.com/go/remotecli) on a Windows machine to the standard path (program files...)

Save the file vms.pl into the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware VI Remote CLI\bin directory.

Save the svmotionGUI.exe somewhere on the machine.

Double click it!

OK..... I figured it out what i was doing wrong. What I was doing was selecting the Hard Disk and not the complete Guest. It seems that it is working now.

This seems like an excellent tool. It doesn't appear to work on VIC 2.5.0 build 103682 (ESXi 3.5 Update 2). The VIC GUI crashes when you try to move a machine. Smiley Sad

Just downloaded and installed v1.0 and using it with VC 2.5 Update 2 (Build 104215) and everything is working jake! This plugin is da bomb, saves me a lot of command line typing or an outage to get this done.

Andrew: very nice thanks for your work on this plugin!!!

I am also having an issue using the GUI pluin to move a single VMDK from LUN to another. The get the same error: "the request storage vmotion would move a virtual machine's disks without assigning the virtual machine a new home, but such a move is not supported on the source host"

I have submitted the error on sourceforge and have not yet heard a response (about 5 days now). Any ideas as to where to start troubleshooting this issue?

I am at ESX3.5 and VI 2.5 build 104215.

mkanakos,

Sounds like you are moving vmdk files only without moving vmx file. Are you moving vmx file along with vmdk files?

I understand what you're saying but I am troubled because I can't figure how I wouldn't move only the VMDK. For example:

Let's assume I have a VM called VM1 and it consisted of two drives called Drive A and Drive B. I also have LUNs A & B and Drive A is on LUN A and Drive B is on LUN B. If I wanted to move Drive B onto another LUN called LUN C, why would VMX file need to move? All I ultimately want to do is move the VMDK to another LUN.

Also, I have been using the svmotion.pl script interactively and it has been working flawlessly; even if the syntax is a little kludgey.

I am not sure how you tested svmotion.pl, but last time when I tested it, moving vmx file is a requirement to use Storage VMotion. You can keep its vmdk file in original place while you are moving vmx file around, but you can not keep vmx file in its original place while moving vmdk files around.

Nicely done with this one.

I have an issue with one of the Datacenters that I'm trying to connect to. The datacenters name is FT Myers. No matter what I try the GUI will not connect to the datacenter.

It connects fine to any of the other 12 datacenters.

Hi, I got the same problem: Data Center names with space are not supported.

Just change the DC name to something like FT-Myers - this worked for me fine.

Anyway. Great Tool! Saved me a lot of time.....

Hello,

I'm getting this error message error 1, the system cannot find the specified file.

I install the CLI remote into the default vmware path, also copied the pl file into the cliremote bin dir.

Has anyone figure out the fix for this issue.

Thanks,

-Mike
