VMWare ESXi 4.0 - Installation Operation Failed

We are attempting to install ESXi 4.0 onto a Supermicro X6DH8. We removed the old RAID card and replaced it with a 3Ware 9690SA-8I-SGL. The RAID was created with (5) 80GB SATA drives but I am getting the following error message.

Installation Operation Failed

The installation operation has encountered a fatal error:

Unable to find a supported device to write the VMWare ESXi 4.0.0 image to.

Any ideas?

ESXi doesn't ship with a 3ware driver. You have to add it manually. See the links here - http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/customize_oem_tgz.php.

Do you have a system or PCI card working with VMDirectPath? Submit your specs to the Unofficial VMDirectPath HCL - http://www.vm-help.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=21.

Dave,

I am having some problems following the instructions as my experience with linux is limited. I downloaded the 3ware.esxi4.oem.tgz so I want to confirm that I rename that to oem.tgz and put it on the root of the CD? Also, it says I need to update the isolinux.cfg to include the oem.tgz file in the boot sequence, the contents of the isolinux.cfg file is below. Should I just add a "---oem.tgz after install.tgz?

The last step is +"The second copy in on a disk dump image within the file image.tgz. For ESX 4.0 that file can be found at this path within the install.tgz file - image.tgz/image.tgz.temptar/usr/lib/vmware/installer/VMware-VMvisor-big-164009-x86_64.dd.bz2/VMware-VMvisor-big-164009-x86_64.dd. This copy of oem.tgz would be used when ESXi boots after the install. You would need to modify this copy for ESXi to boot using it after the installation has been completed."+

How do I do this? I am using a Windows machine. 7zip can open the archive all the way up until i get to the .dd file and then it tries to open it up in notepad. How do I copy the oem.tgz into this archive? Is there some software I can download?

CONTENTS OF ISOLINUX.CFG

default menu.c32

I should also mention that I am using Windows and I have tried to extract the ISO with Magic ISO, add the oem.tgz file, modify the isolinux.cfg file, convert it to ISO using Imgburn and then burn the ISO to CD. I get "operating system not found". This is frustrating...I made absolutely sure the RAID card I purchased was on the HCL so I didn't have to do this...

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I was able to finally get it working - we happened to have an onboard SATA RAID controller with 2 ports. I hooked up two spare drives, configured a RAID1, installed VMWare on the RAID1 and then followed the directions on the website below to configure 3ware as secondary storage. It might work out better performance wise to have two raid controllers so I am happy with this set up.
