Update ESXi Server 3.5 with VI Client / vSphere ?

Hi all,

I have a ESX Server 3i, 3.5.0, 110271 installed. On the way to upgrade to ESXi 4 I came accross vSphere 4 client which has the host update utility. But this utility fails to upgrade my server, and it shows

"Patching this host version is not supported by vSphere Host Update Utility".

Is there any other possibilty to successfully patch or upgrade this ESXi server from the desktop?

The upgrading (to 4.0) is not so important, but patching (to U2, U3 or U4) would be great. As far as I understood those two are different capabilities.

Regards,

Robert

110271 is quite old.

If you have vCentre, use VUM to update to a more current revision, then upgrade to 4 if you like

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

No sorry, I do not have vCenter. This is a single ESXi host only administrated via VI Client / vSphere Client.

Formerly I had VI client 2.5.0-104263. This one had nothling like this host update utility. Now I have vSphere client 4.0.0-162856. This version cannot upgrade/patch my ESXi 3.5 110271.

I am wonderung wether there is any version between those two which can upgrade/patch this old ESXi 3.5 110271?

Have a look at this thread (there is a link to make the update of ESXi 3):

Then follow this tutorial to do the upgrade:

Thank you Andre, but lets go step by step to the points I fail:

- I have the old VMWare Infrastructure Update (VIUpdate) from the VI Client. This one seems not to support a proxy server. So I cannot make connection to the VMWare repository. fails

What remains is downloading patches by myself, but I did not find the upgrade packages for U3 or U4, I only find ISOs.

With this being said even the very manual way on the command line fails.

Any other advise?

To bypass proxy issues, why you do not use a Windows VM with RDP?

I am not sure wether I understood you right, but the ESXi Server has no internet access, and my desktop PC is behind a proxy. So getting through the proxy is essential, except the U3 or U4 updates are available as upgrade packages. Then I could download them with the browser.

HI all,

I found out that I identified the wrong proxy in the proxy conf scripts. Taking the right proxy solves this issue. But it might be possible that this was part of the solution:

http://communities.vmware.com/thread/220333 (changing machine.config in .net CLR).
