Hi there,

I was under the conclusion that it was not possible to hot migrate a VM from DataCenter A to DataCenter B in VMware ESX 3.5 up2.

However I am able to hot migrate now a VM from DataCenter A to DataCenter B with VMware ESX 3.5 udpate4 but please correct me if I am wrong here.

You can cold migrate between ANY 2 hosts that are managed by the same vCentre

(as long as you meet all compatibilty contraints (ie, CPU masks, datastore accesibilty, port groups and so on)

if that VM is part of a cluster in a datacenter then you cannot vmotion to another datacenter. If that VM is part of a standalone host and all vmotion requirements are met on both ends then I can see it being possible.

However, I am under the impression that you cannot vmotion between datacenters, regardless of your configuration, but hey, i've been wrong before.

Hmm... since a datacenter is the top level of the common namespace and moving objects between datacenters is labelled as "might lead to unpredictable result" it seems even more unpredictable to do a vmotion (hot migrate).. So if it works anyway, for some reason, and other activities such as deploying VMs from templates across datacenters gives a warning when you execute them , and also hot migration was activated intentionally by vmware there should be big red warnings while doing that and very obvious that you are allowed to, if you acknowledge the risks..... so I'm a bit confused when you say that you CAN do it and are then asking if you are right?

So my Q is: Have u been able to successfully migrate a running VM between two defined datacenters in virtual center?

Troy already answered this question. The answer is NO.

VM has to be off, you can't HOT Migrate between Datacenters.

I was also under the impression that VMotin between datacenters was not possible but what if the answer was "nearly" Yes RParker?

Now I remember what happened. During my initial test, VMotion passed all the validation test (see attached pictures named step1). Then I posted my first post thinking that I was able to do a hot migration between datacenter as I did not get any vmotion validation errors. Then and after reading your comments I run the last part of the migration wizard again and got this error when trying to migrate VM from DataCetner MAdrid to DataCenter Barcelona: The imput arguments had entities that did not belong to the same datacenter (see attached picture named step2).

Now the question is, why did not vmotion validation test detect the error before during the migration wizard?
