ESX4i on DL380 G6 odd Network problems?

This has me seriously baffled! so, maybe someone has seen similar and can shed light on it.

I have a customer with HP DL380 G6 servers (2 of) attached to a CX4-120 via FC, simple enough, both servers have 2 Quad port NICs with all 8 ports in a single vSwitch trunk and tagged vlans. Route by IP Hash is used on this vSwitch, the management Console has a pair of teamed nics in a non-tagged trunk with Route based on source IP port.

We have P2V'd 2 windows 2003 servers and imported 2 from a standalone ESX3i server. All 4 VMs migrated but dropped their networks! but we reconfigured and removed the hidden devices, we then connected to all the appropriate shares and tested that we could read/write as appropriate.

But, when users logged on we found the applications didn't run, complaining about "unable to acess source files" even though we could browse to the files it said it couldn't see. We spent the next 8 hours cloning, patching, re-patching, moving servers...we got to a point where we had proved that the network was not at fault, the which was our main concern, the P2V / V2V process was sound, and we were not going MAD!

finally we tried a "left field idea" and installed the same release on a DL360 G5 which has the same QUAD port nic but no FC attachment. We Cloned one of the VMs to the Local DataStore set the network and powered on and what do you know it worked fine! so i tried another server, same result? maybe it's the cloning, so i cloned to one of the 2 G6 servers, nope back to not working... so it appears to be something in the G6 servers...

any thoughts?

That is a strange one. Smiley Sad

Perhaps make sure NTP is working on the G6's and that the guests are syncing the correct time.

If you use vmware to sync your time on the guests and the time goes ahead of the host it will not correct it. It will only correct it if the time is running slow.

Other then that I am not sure.

well, for anyone that happens to stumble across this in a random thread search...the answer was the XD bit functionality setting. By default this is set "enabled" in the G6 BIOS, we found that the application didn't/ couldn't use the extended functionality and was therefore unable to run.

Have masked it at the VM-edit settings, but could also have done it in the BIOS or within the OS advanced perfromance settings.
