Problems Accessing ESXi 4.0 with Dell OpenManage 6.1

Hi there,

I'm pretty new to VMWare so I'm just looking for some pointers. I am basically trying enable management of my ESXi 4.0 host with OpenManage 6.1. Now, I have read this post from start to end: with no joy. What I have done is:

1. Installed the free Dell Customised installer for ESXi 4.0 on my PowerEdge 2950.

2. Applied patch release ESXi400-200906001. Rebooted the host.

3. Installed the vSphere CLI tool on my local machine, and used it to apply the Dell OpenManage Offline Bundle and VIB for ESXi 4.0, using vihostupdate. This completed successfully. Rebooted the host.

4. Set CIMOEMProvidersEnabled = 1 in the Advanced Software Configuration section using the vSphere client. Rebooted the host.

5. Downloaded and installed the Dell OpenManage Server Administrator Managed Node on my WIndows 7 workstation. I then open this, and attempt to login to the host.

The error I'm getting is 'LOGIN FAILED....INTERNAL ERROR'

I'm at a bit of a dead end now! Any pointers on how to troubleshoot would be great. Please bear in mind I'm a complete newcomer to this!

Thanks in advance...

are you using the latest Server administrator at the windows side?

There is a new server administrator required for OpenManage 6.1 which is posted at dell website.

Also can you check the service status of OpenManage service in ESXi?

You can get it by logging to tech supprot mode and see /usr/lib/ext/dell/dataeng status?

Please go through the below thread http://communities.vmware.com/message/1312782#1312782

I have the same problem...

Status is OK for all the services, and I'm running the 6.1.0 server manager. I tried on both WinXP and 2003 with the same error.

could you please restart the services of OpenManage in ESXi 4.0?

/usr/lib/ext/dell/dataeng restart

please wait for some time after the services are restarted before connecting from windows server administrator

Same thing: does not work.

Login failed....Internal Error

And btw, this is the version I have:

Version 6.1.0

Interesting !!!

I am also using Openmanage 6.1 on ESXi 4.0 with out any issues. MAke sure that Patch 1 is installed on ESXi 4.0

One silly question..have you set any password for ESXi 4.0? if there is no password set in ESXi 4.0, you will see this error from server administrator. also tick the check box button for certificate related stuff.

Hi there,

If I run esxupdate query, it shows OpenManage as being installed, but if I try to run /usr/bin/ext/dell/dataeng restart, I get 'Not Found'

I have rebooted the server a number of times. Any ideas?

Yes, I set a password for ESXi and make OMSA ignore the certificate, with the same results.

Can you please answer me the following questions?

- What username are you using? "root"?

- What password do you use? The one from ESXi, that you use to access the console?

- Did you change anything on the ESXi firewall settings?

- What value do you have on uservars.CIMCustomProvidersEnable?

- Is "patch1" the firmware update that was available on update manager, or is it something else?

- What is your ESXi Version? Mine is 175625

Thanks.

answers for your questions.

What username are you using? "root"?

i am using "root"

What password do you use? The one from ESXi, that you use to access the console?

i set password as "password"

Did you change anything on the ESXi firewall settings?

NO

What value do you have on uservars.CIMCustomProvidersEnable?

Its CIMOEMPRovidersEnabled and the value is 1. are you not setting this as '1'? dont bother abt CIMCustomProvidersEnable variable.

Is "patch1" the firmware update that was available on update manager, or is it something else?

What is your ESXi Version? Mine is 175625

its same as mine

AARRGH!!! That's not a silly question. But I am. I still had a blank password. Set one and went in first time.

Thank you. I have been trying to crack this for hours. I'm going to go home and lie in a darkened room for a while....

Thanks again.

Unfortunatelly I have a password for root on all my ESXi and this still doesn't work Smiley Sad

Did you perform a clean install of vSphere 4 or did you upgrade from 3.5?

@bluntTony : The exact location of OpenManage services is not /usr/bin/ext/dell/dataeng

its /usr/lib/ext/dell/dataeng.

@rjtd : thats sad :(...

have you checked the variable from usevars? is it CIMOEMProvidersEnabled set as '1'.

can you check the network connectivity between your windows and ESXi? also is there any firewall set in your windows?

No firewall on Windows.

And there is no way to know what the hell is this error, given that I can't see any logs on ESX related to Dell.

can you restart the service of your windows server administrator.? probably restart windows? ( not sure ...)

Have you checked whether the variable you have enabled is CIMOemProvidersEnabled or not?

Already tried to reboot. Already tried to install OMSA on another server. Already tried to remove and reinstall the VIB on ESX.

CIMOemProvidersEnabled = 1.

All the daemons are started.

This is sad.

I'm in the same boat.

Is there another way to check the status of OM besided going through the tech support mode, since it breaks VMWare warranty? Using RCLI or vMA?
