vmware removed access to the cli when free license is used. They want to force users to buy some type of license this is where you need to use citrix xenserver as they are the only product that has no restrictions in the free version for backups and live motion

Take a look at this article for more information regarding the lockdown after ESXi 3.5u3: http://vmetc.com/2009/03/31/esxi-u4-ends-free-version-read-and-write-access-from-the-rcli/

You'll need to use the vSphere client to create snapshots, technically you can also take a look into VIX, but the current 1.6.2 version does not support vSphere; I hear that a new version should be coming out soon that will support vSphere and you might be able to use it temporarily for some VM management. Take a look at this thread for more information:

VIX cannot be used in esx 4i as a backup solution. Vmware justs wants you to buy a license. If you do require to use the backup of vms just migrate to citrix xen or buy the foundation license

Agreed, VIX is not meant to be used as a backup solution but with the next release of VIX, it will be able to communicate with vSphere and you can play around it to make it function as a cheap/free backup solution using supported APIs.

You also can take a look at: or just purchase a basic foundation license to have full r/w access to the API.
