Win 2008 VMs reporting issue with \Device\RaidPort0

We are running ESX 3.5 u3 and have an issue on some of our 2008 vms. It is causing BSOD and reboots. The error logs give us the following:

"The driver has detected that device \Device\RaidPort0 has old or out-of-date firmware. Reduced performance may result."

Buried in the debug is the line:

"DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID: VISTA_DRIVER_FAULT"

I have found a couple of threads linking to KB article 950772 () and the associated hotfix. We applied this hotfix and still appear to be getting the issue. Is this a problem with our VMTools? Is there a specific version of VM hardware we should be using?

windows 2008 x64 is supported on ESX3.5 U3, U3, U4,and 4.0 so good there.

Found known issues:

Windows Guests Installed with LSI Logic Storport Driver 1.26.05 Crash while Booting ESX 3.5 Update 2 and earlier: When this Windows guest is installed with LSI Logic Storport driver version 1.26.05 or later it crashes with a blue screen while booting on ESX Server 3.5 Update 2 and earlier. See knowledge base article 1006224 at for more information.

We are using the LSI logic SCSI selection.

Seeminly tied to this issue is a warning in Event Viewer - System log stating "The driver has detected that device \Device\RaidPort0 has old or out-of-date firmware. Reduced performance may result."

In our troubleshooting, we have upgraded to ESX 3.5 Upd 4 (and upgraded the VMtools) and applied Microsoft hotfix 950772. Since doing so, we have not seen the event or the BSOD return, but it is too early to declare victory.

Anyone else run into this issue and resolve it successfully?

It appears that ESX3.5 U4 + MS hotfix is enough to prevent BOTH the event showing up in the log AND the BSOD issue. If either issue resurfaces, I will be sure to post again.
