ESXi 4.0 Install on USB stick

Hi,

I've installed ESXi 3.5 on USB before, but I'm having trouble with the 4.0 ISO. The directory structure seems different and includes a file:

image.tgz.temptar

I have no idea what a TEMPTAR file is!

Thanks for any help.

Nick

Duh. I did not try such an obvious approach. Thanks for the tip. I will try on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 III later.

temptar is just a tar file, but as noted you can also install direct from the ISO to a USB flash drive - http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/Boot_ESXi_from_USB_flash_drive.php.

Hi,

what's the exact error are you seeing? are you using ISO image or dd file for flashing the USB key?

Thanks,

Krishna

I had not tried installing directly to the USB. I was trying to extract the files and install per the v3.5 PDF instructions.

Best regards,

Nick

have you extracted the ISO file? can you see a dd.bz2 file in usr/lib/vmware/installer folder?
