What exactly *IS* vSphere?

Ok, maybe i'm just dense. I've read a bunch of the descriptions on the web site, read the information, etc.. But it is just filled with buzzwords and very little meat as to what it actually is and how it actually works.

It seems like it's just a rebranded esx4, but including some vague stuff about clouds.

I'm no idiot, and I understand what cloud computing is, but come one VMWare... you gotta do a better job of telling us what this is. Stop the hand waving and tell us real benefits. I feel like i'm being sold snake oil every time i look at the product material.

Sounds like you got it. vSphere is the product name of Virtual Infrastructure 4.0

It is just a new product name like that vCenter is the new name for Virtual Center these days.

It is marketing on the loose... it alienates the users more as that it helps if you ask me.

But better not ask me :smileygrin:

vSphere is the new name for VI-4 - it represents the suite of products that make up VMware's new releases - ESX 4, vCenetr 4, DRS, HA, vMotion, FT etc -

VMware has changed the naming convention of it's next generation VI3 product suite to vSphere 4.0 suite. The following link contains some cloud related FAQs:

Virtual Center remains as a separate entity as it is with VI3 product suite. Going forward, to keep all the product release versions in alignment, next generation of virtual center will be known as, VMware vCenter 4.0.

Here is the dicitonary meaning of cloud:

1. A visible mass of water droplets suspended in the air

2. Any dust, steam or smoke mass resembling such a suspended mass

3. Anything which makes things foggy or gloomy

4. A group of something

I think 3 and 4 sum up the "Cloud" aspect of vSphere. So vSphere is ESX 4 with the added cloud benefit of making a group of something foggy.
