The error about reconnecting 25 times really shouldn't happen unless something is wrong with the configuration on the host. It may help if you try a full reinstall - uninstall Fusion, reboot the Mac, then install Fusion again. If the problem still persists, the next step is to collect your vmware.log and send to us.

Hi David:

Thanks for the response -- I really appreciate it! I uninstalled Fusion 2.0.3, rebooted my Mac, reinstalled Fusion 2.0.3, rebooted my Mac again (just in case) and, with bated breath, launched Fusion. As soon as I started up my VM, i again got the dreaded error: "serial0: Failed to connect to the Virtual Printer daemon after 25 attempts. The device will be disconnected" I tried starting my other VM (Win XP), the first guest was my Win 7 beta VM, and got the same error. So, I got my vmware.log and it is attached here (zipped). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Ron,

Unfortunately the log file basically just reports that error, and nothing else. This means that the ThinPrint process is being started on the Mac, but then either terminates or doesn't establish a connection to Fusion for some reason. It may help to provide a few more log files to see if they contain any more information. Since some of the log files change daily, it would be a good idea to try running the VM again to make sure the log messages are recent.

The relevant log files are /var/log/system.log, /var/log/cups/access_log, and /var/log/cups/error_log. If you're not sure how to copy those log files, the easiest way is to open Console (from /Applications/Utilities), select the files in the log file list, and choose File -> Save a Copy As... Or you can just copy and paste parts of the log files with timestamps around when you run the VM and get the error. Including the new vmware.log would be good as well, to help match the timestamps with the error.

Also, could you try re-enabling printers after the VM is already running to see if you get the same error? This can be done by checking the Enabled checkbox in the Settings -> Printers window.

By the way, feel free to start a separate topic for this issue, since it's not really related to the 2.0.3 update.

Now that 2.0.4 is out, I have this problem more intensive.

- Firefox 3.0.8 on OS X 10.5.6, with DownThenAll!: download hangs at 99%. After a pause and resume I get a 403 error

- Safari 4 beta on OS X: download hangs at the end. After a stop and resume I get a no permission error

- Opera 9.64 on OS X: download hangs at 99%. After a pause and resume it reports that the download is complete, but MD5 and SHA1 checksums do not match

- IE 8 on XP SP3 on Fusion 2.0.2: download hangs at the end and of course no way to do anything but cancel the download

Sigh. I will try again something later.

Regards,

Bart

One more:

- Firefox 3.0.8 on XP SP3 on Fusion 2.0.2 with Go!Zilla 5.0.3: Go!Zilla reports a 403 error at the beginning of the download, but only after about 3 minutes of retrying.

Yes, I mean 2.0.4, just made available. I have had no problem downloading 2.0.4, but now I am a bit dubious about applying it.

In 2.0.3, I had no problems printing from Windows XP Pro SP3. I didn't try printing from Ubuntu 8.10_64bits, but everything seemed to be working OK.

Does anybody knows what difference(s) there is(are) between 2.0.4 and 2.0.3? Do VMware Tools in 2.0.4 need to be installed?

Of course, I know I can find out by myself, instead of asking questions. But since this forum is so responsive, I thought to ask, before applying 2.0.4.

I shall apply 2.0.4 in an hour or so, and report back, anyway.

Thanks in advance.

Another question, sorry for the redux. Is 2.0.4 compatible with Ubuntu 9.04, that will be available very shortly?

Thanks again,

Sorry I may have opened a new thread when I changed the version number in the subject. I have just downloaded without problems 2.0.4 (the larger download that includes McAfee install for one year.

I used, as usual Flock, with SpeedDownload (currently version 5.1.2).

I am waiting for some response of the forum about the changes they are, or might be, in VMware 2.0.4, before applying it.

I'll wait another 30 minutes, and apply it.

I am now posting from Internet Explore 8.0 under Windows XP Pro, after installing VMware 2.0.4.

VMware Tools version before applying VMware Fusion 2.0.4 was 7.0.3 build 156731

Now, after installing Tools, it is 7.0.3 build 159196.

Printing (HP JetDesk 41000 series - USB hardwired to the Mac host) works fine.

I shall check the Ubuntdu virtual machine later, and report.

WoodyZ, thanks.

Ran your script in Jaunty 9.04's Terminal, followed the prompts.

Installation was shorter than reading the instructions Smiley Happy, but I'm glad I read them all.

Thanks again.

Your welcome and I'm glad it made the process easier for you.

Yes it always takes longer to read the documentation and believe me I tried to keep it to a minimum and it's tough to do sometimes because you have to give enough for the users that are not used to and or familiar with the entire process yet keep it short enough that you don't put the user to sleep while reading it. Smiley Happy Also because I didn't have the time to code conditional statements and error checking I had to make sure the user understood Internet Connectivity was a must. Also enough information needs to be provided so that the user feel comfortable and confidant to use something posted to the Internet and know it will be safe. Now for someone like me I wouldn't read the directions, I would download it and read the shell scrip and see that it's just fine and be glad to use it knowing I didn't have to manually do what the shell script automates. I'm not in the script reading league :). I can grasp the concept, but not beyond.

Question that comes to mind now: when (if?) VMware releases a build that is compatible with Jaunty 9.04, should I go through the Install VMWare tools process?

That's why there are directions. Smiley Happy

Once a version of Fusion is released that supports Ubuntu 9.04 and you already have a Ubuntu 9.04 Virtual Machine with VMware Tools installed that was created under a previous version you would would just follow normal standard practices of installing VMware Tools in a Linux Virtual Machine from the Command Line with the Tar Installer and my shell script would not be necessary although unless VMware changes how they modify the fstab file then one will need to edit the fstab file to gain access to the HGFS Share as noted in 's that is actually a separate issue that I just happen to incorporate in my shell script and has nothing to do with Ubuntu 9.04 not yet being officially supported. (Although I have a separate script that I've been using on my system to deal with that and I'll probably upload it to the Forum if VMware doesn't change how they modify the fstab file.)

Anyway you would upgrade VMware Tools first uninstalling the existing version of VMware Tools via the Terminal using "sudo /usr/bin/vmware-uninstall-tools.pl" then reboot the Virtual Machine and then install the latest version of VMware Tools manually using the directions in the help file. My shell scrip it really meant just for Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition being installed in Fusion 2.0.4 (2.0.2 and 2.0.3 also) and to make it easy to resolve what I know as the known issues within this context.

I can't thank you enough, really.

I have copied your instructions, and shall keep them in view of the next VMware build, if applicable.

I wish there were more people like you. Have yourself a fine week end.

Running licensed Fusion 2.02 with paid-for McAfee.

To upgrade - should I just use 2.04 or must I install 2.03 then 2.04?

Also - should I use the version with free Mcafee or the version without - this is not at all clear

in the dowload pages. I don't want to have to reinstall McAfee. I downloaded 2.02

ages ago and only just installed it and it worked great and my McAfee was still

there (I can't tell if it was the version with McAfee or the version without - it

disn't ask me the question).

You can go right to 2.0.4 and if you have saved the 2.0.2 installer or copy the antivirus.iso from the existing install in the event you need it later then you can download the light version or if you don't want to have to mess with it then just download the regular version however if McAfee is already installed you will not have to reinstall it in Windows just because you're upgrading Fusion versions.
