I have a performance problem with VMI enabled on the ESXi and Linux systems, does anyone have any advice for me?
I have four ESXi boxes. One on a single processor 1.26 Ghz, one with dual 2.26 Ghz hyperthread (4 logical), one with dual 1.4 Ghz hyperthread (4 logical), and one on a single 3.0 Ghz hyperthread.
I don't believe any of them have Intel's VI hardware virtualization instructions. I use ESXi 3.5 U3 as the host and Gentoo 2.6.26 as the client OS.
I've tried enabling VMI on each machine and every time I do, the performance of the VM is decreased by a factor of 4 to 10 times. For example:

portage: Fri Dec 19 02:58:21 2008: 167 seconds
portage: Fri Dec 19 03:01:57 2008: 193 seconds
portage: Sat Dec 20 23:40:14 2008: 54 seconds
Here are 4 emerges on Gentoo. One with tickless and VMI disabled (43 seconds), one with Tickless enabled and VMI in ESXi and in Gentoo paravirtual VMI enabled, one with HZ=100 and VMI enabled, and the last one again with tickless and VMI disabled (54 seconds.)
Everything I find online suggests VMI (when enabled in the kernel and in the .vmx file) should increase speed or at the very least leave it at the same. I have been working on this for a week and googled to death on it. I've consulted with others running ESXi and they can reproduce the same problem when using Gentoo. I haven't tried Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn or any other OS, but I wouldn't think that would matter much.

Interesting, can you try with this kernel command line option "reboot=k" let me know if a reboot on this kernel too fails for you.
Also what is the "reboot_type" variable initialized to in your kernel ? Its a enum defined in arch/x86/kernel/reboot.c
enum reboot_type reboot_type = BOOT_KBD;
but GRUB sets the parameter to reboot=bios.
So I've tried reboot=kbd and many others, they seem to work with the exception of reboot=bios.
Can any reboot type be recommended (b, s, t, k, e, w, c, ... )?
But I'm still thinking of why reboot=bios doesn't work on the paravirtualized guest, I thought thats a very compatible reboot type.
And a different question:
Can you recommend any timer for if not running in paravirtualized mode on esx 3.5?
I think NO_HZ is a good option, but is it good to also activate HIGH_RES_TIMERS?
TSC does not work well (Clocksource tsc unstable), so should I just use notsc as grub parameter (what is used then?), or better compile with ACPI (which seems to be used in preference over tsc automatically).
Also I'm unsure if its better to use RTC_CLASS or RTC (/RTC_GEN).

Can I ask why are you using reboot=bios ? Is there a specific reason to use bios method for rebooting ?
The default method, i.e. reboot=k works fine.
As far as the bios mode bug is concerned, that code doesn't look like its paravirt aware, and we might have to fix that, but I don't see the motivation right now.
Regarding your other questions related to timer, on non-paravirt case, i would be happy to help you with that, but can you please start a different discussion topic ? Lets not convolute this thread anymore and keep it limited to paravirt slowdown issues.

Installed 2.6.27-gentoo-r10 and the system is performing much better.
4m 40.901s with VMI enabled vs 5m 24.680s with it disabled.

reboot=bios unfortunately seems to be a default grub value in this distribution. Propably embedded devices like it more, but actually I don't know if it's set only for x86 or for the other architectures too.
So I didn't want it personally, and I will change it as soon I've found where to remove the specific grub parameter at the build environment.

P.S. I know the article about timers, but they only recommend settings for distribution x, and not what should be preffered when building it on my own, where I have all choices. But you're right, this should go to an extra thread.
