VMControl error -999: Unknown error: SoapError: ServerFaultCode(1604) : (Operation failed since another task is in progress.)

I noticed a VM had a couple of snapshots dating back a couple of months <sigh>.

Rather than tie up the GUI, I ran the command : vmware-cmd <vmx> removesnapshots

I've used this many times before with no issues. I normally run the command and get on with other stuff.

When I looked back I see a wired error, whcih I didn't record.

The gui still shows there are snapshots.

If I run the command again, I get the error : VMControl error -999: Unknown error: SoapError: ServerFaultCode(1604) : (Operation failed since another task is in progress.)

I've searched but I cannot find any reference to this.

I'll shutdown the server tonighht and try again.

Does anyone know what the error means, or why it may have occured ?

Thanks

Hi Matt

Did you finally sort this out? I have a similar error, and it is driving me to the bend. I need to stop a virtual machine but I cant because it is stuck with a snapshot, the first I was gonna take from the VM

(VM it is a W2k3 Server R2 SP2 )

I miss a lot the power button. . .

Thanks in advance

Hi guys,

I don't know if You have the same issue I had before. My situation was that during VCB backup some snapshots sometimes "hang", and I could not remove snapshot, and also could not power off vm. I was getting the same error message as You. I am in such situation doing:

I log on via https to ESX host that hosts this VM. I can see if operation is pending. If it is, then I try to reboot this vm from https interface. If this is NOT SUCCESS, then I must log on to ILO (console) of server (NOT PUTTY)and then make 2 commands (from root):

service mgmt-vmware restart

service vmware-vpxa restart

Then I can power on this VM.

I hope this helps Smiley Happy

Hi mlubinski

Sorry about the delay. Finally I figured this out using " service mgmt-vmware restart " command.

It took a few minutes, but it worked.

Thank you very much for your answer.

Great to hear that.

So if this is correct, You can mark this answer as CORRECT, so other people will know that this is one of possible solutions.

Hi again

I would like to mark it like Correct Answer, but I am not the owner of the post, so I guess I can not do it.

In fact, I can't see the button to do it .

Sorry about that.
