Quick Poll: OpenGL-based Windows applications

Hello All,

Here is your chance of affecting feature direction in future VMware Fusion releases! I am looking into possible OpenGL support for Windows guests in VMware Fusion, and am wondering if folks can kindly reply with your favorite OpenGL-based applications that you would like to run. For reference, here is a list of OpenGL based Windows applications: http://opengl.org/products/platform/C5/, but what I really wanted to hear is what are the most important, top 3 applications for you or your business, what are making you keep your physical PC or your Boot Camp partition Smiley Happy

Note: this post is just one product manager's effort to collect some data on OpenGL; it should not be viewed as a commitment of any sort Smiley Happy

Thank you.

Hi David,

Can I ask "why the Windows-only focus?"

It would be quite nice to have OpenGL support for non-Windows guests, too (compiz, Stellarium, Linux games, etc.).

Thanks,

- Brian

Because that's where the most bang for the buck investment return is going to occur initially. It's always about making the money first and don't believe it anyone tries to convince you it's any different because the stock holders what a return on their investment! Smiley Happy

I agree Compiz Fusion and Stellarium would be nice.

Yeah, that was really more of a "don't forget about non-Windows guests during the design of the underlying architecture" plea. I'd hate to see GL support unnecessarily restricted to just Windows guests because of design decisions made early on. Smiley Happy

Brian and Woody,

Thanks for your feedback. Linux apps are valid data points as well. At this point, I really wanted to just get a sense what people are using. So keep sending them in! We will probably do a ranking once there is enough data.

Thanks.

David

The only application I use in Windows is "Rhinoceros 3D" from Rober McNeel. I use it in boot camp via VM ware because the full features of the 3d mouse and mx revolution work only this way, however Rhino 3D is being ported to Mac most of the plug-ins will stay with windows.

Hi David,

Thanks for setting-up this poll!

Here's my wishlist:

  1. QuakeLive

  2. Quake3

  3. GLQuake

  4. Quake2

I am thrilled to see that OpenGL support is considered for VMWare (Fusion?) support.

Thanks a lot!

Edit: It's also a whishlist because it's going to be implemented so fast It'll make a whishing sound.

Er... I just checked the list and those 3 are not listed. Strange, since I was sure they are both utilizing OpenGL graphics...

The list of applications at OpenGL.org is not necessarily a complete listing of all OpenGL apps. AutoDesk Inventor isn't listed and I know for certain that it is an OpenGL application.
