VCB / HP DataProtector 6.0 / backup all vms on a host by host basis

  • we have approx 20 ESX hosts, with approx 8vm's per host.

  • HP DP integration via VCB 1.1

instead of issuing the pre-backup script to backup all vms on all esx servers via the VC server, I would like to backup the vm's on a host by host basis.

the reason for this is I cant allocate 3TB of data to my VCB LUN, to backup all my VM's at once, I would like the vm backups to be staggered.

Essentially I would like a pre backup script that looks something like this: vmwarepreexec.cmd - h ESX01.domain.com -a all -r D:\vmimages\ESX01\ -t fullvm

does anyone use anything similar ?

Thanks, points will be awarded accordingly

If you have 20 ESX host's, and usually they would be configured the same, normally you don't care which host has the VM's. Backups are done per LUN not per host, so I don't think you can configure it work this way.

Most VCB aware programs limit the backups to 2 concurrent VM's per LUN anyway, so in that way you aren't overloading a particular LUN. That's the reason why you have to find a VCP certified backup solution, so these problems are taken into consideration.
