IBM hardware and ESX 3.5 U2 Hardware Health stats

Hi,

What is the name of the server feature set that is required to support hardware health monitoring in U2?

Health data works fine on an x3650 but shows nothing on an x346.

I believe it's just the ability to pull via CIM API from your hardware, I'm not exactly sure what the name feature is on the Server. I believe most new hardware has this capability

It all depends on the CIM providers VMware has put into ESX 3.5 Update 2. For example the IBM 10k raid adapter in our x3850 M2's get picked up, but the 8k's in our x3650's do not

Thats due to the CIM providers only supporting LSI based raid adapters (like the 10k) I believe. This does open the door to hardware vendors producing compatible providers for their hardware under ESX and ESXi

There is also a bug in the Health Status when using the IBM 10k (LSI Megaraid 1078) controller with BBU cache , it shows a "Health State Not Good" for the battery, even when there is no hardware issue

Actually, per my understanding and experience, this is not completely accurate. Meaning, IBM director installes is own instance of pegasus, CIMOM. Not adding to the base instance that VMware installs. This is evident when you look at which CIMOM ports are assigned to which daemon for CIM. IBM has/is still trying to decide if this is a good thing, since the two instances sometimes step on each other.

Hello

Have you any update on the IBM 10k battery bug - I got the same in our three x3850M2 servers. Have you came up whit any solution to this??

I'm pretty sure it involves the IPMI feature.

No update on this, VMware will need to patch this to work correctly. Perhaps you should open a case with VMware if you are really concerned about it Smiley Happy

I am aware that the IBM's are not the only nones with health status issues, some model Dells and HP's also have various issues

IBM adds its own specific instance of CIM server with Director. To do more than VMware does.

I opened a SR on this and my reply was...

Good day! This is a known issue and engineering is working on a resolution. I will place this SR in pending and will notify you once we have released the patch.

Thank you for using VMware Support
