Start virtual machine using .vmx file?

I have recently updated to Workstation 6.5.1 and suddenly I cannot start my virtual machines by double-clicking the corresponding .vmx file any longer. This actually used to work on the same machine (Windows Vista SP1) with Workstation 6.0.

The only thing that happens is that the workstation window is displayed with the corresponding virtual machine selected. I still have to click on 'Power on this virtual machine' to get it started which kind of reduces productivity.

Is that a known issue? And is there already a solution?

BTW....I have found another thread dealing with the same scenario (granted it was Workstation 6.5) and it was due to some antivirus application. However, I am not running any anti-virus software on the machine in question.

Thanks for any hint to get that working again (without downgrading) since this is actually kind of annoying.

Just a thought ..check this open the explorer on the host go to tools->folderoptions->file types locate/select .vmx file in registered file types then click advanced you will find available actions for .vmx file select appropriate action and click set default, you are done

Andreas - this comes because 6.5 introduces some new "strange" defaults in the vmx - check the "power" options in the GUI

Thanks....but I can select either VMware Player or VMware Workstation (which is currently set). Are you saying it should be set to Player instead? This somewhat does not make sense to me though...but...well...I may try it.

Was this changes between Workstation 6.0 and 6.5?

Thanks.

Thanks...I actually have looked at that already and even changed the start button one from 'Power On' to 'Start Up Guest' but it did not change anything....which by the way makes me wonder what the difference is between these two options in the first place.

If you have more details, I would certainly appreciate your input. Thank you very much.
