error while powering on: Pipe: Read failed

Hi,

I have the following configuration:

Fedora 8 x64 Running Vmwareplayer 2.5.0 build-118166

with debian 4, Fedora 8 x386 and winxp as guests OSes.

After a crash of my host, I was able to restore my complete Vmware directory from a previous backup. The zip archive I used contained all 3 guest virtual machines (debian, Fedora and Winxp). I am able to play two of the virtual machines (Debian and Fedora) however, when I try to play the winxp virtual machine, I get the following error

error while powering on: Pipe: Read failed

My guess is that the zip archive was created with the winxp guess OS in suspend mode instead of completely shutdown. Is there a way to bypass this status and simply reboot the Winxp OS?

Thanks for any hint.

I finally solved the problem.

Here is what I did:

  1. I renamed the file .vmss to something like .vmss_bad which seems to store the state of the virtual in suspend mode.

  2. I restarted the virtual machine again (this almos crashed my machine since vmwareplayer displays tons of error)

  3. I terminate the vmwareplayer process

  4. I rename back .vmss_ba to .vmss

  5. I restarted the virtual machine again

  6. Upon restart, vmwareplayer asked if I wanted to discard the saved state and I said yes.

And now it works pretty well
