Hello
I am trying to connect my USB device Garmin 496 to my XP running unter VM. The device is not recognized. I can not update driver and so on.
it is just not connecting.
The device is detected well under: Win XP, Win Vista, Bootcam (Win XP) and under Mac OS
But not under the Virtual Machine
I found in this formum several questions for the same problem ...but no real answers.
Here are the system details
Hardware:
Apple Mac Book, 4GB RAM, 160 GB HD.
GPS Garmin 496 (flight navigation GPS), USB cable. Device similar as GPS Garmin 296, 295, 495
OS:
1) Mac OS. Leopard, all current updates 2) Windows XP Home , all current updatres and SP's (SP3).
VM Fusion, current version (as by 11.2008)
Final Application
Software is Flight Planner, which has a mode to transfer flight plans to the Garmin GPS.
But this only works if the USB device is recognized and properly installed under Win XP
Btw: Under Parrallel Desktop on another mac I have the same problem with the Garmin GPS 496. here is says "Device is used by another process"
Thank you for any help
Frank
I have EXACTLY the same problem and it is driving me CRAZY, I have tried everyting to get this working under VMware fusion without any success.
I have a Garmin GPS496 and running 10.5.5 of OS X and version 2.01 of VMware Fusion on a Mac Book Pro and I receive the Device not recognised it works great under Bootcamp and on other installation of Vista on a PC
Is there a fix please as this is extremly urgent I am a Pilot and need to connect my GPS to my flight planing software that ONLY runs under Windows.
Regards,
Paul
I should have mentioned that there are NO OS X drivers for this device
Please get the USB log as requested in the previous post.
Hi,
at this time I am not able any more to send you those logs, sorry.
I must admit gave this up for the moment. It was just too time consuming, plus I had to pay for both systems, VM AND Parallels, for my trial & errors.
What I did is I reinstalled XP using Bootcamp and my normal Garmin USB drivers. I am running the whole thing under Bootcamp and it works fine. USB driver for Garmin 496 is recognized, flight planner
works and smoothly connects to Garmin 496. So I can transfer my flight plans & WP's to the GPS.
As long here is no stable solution for those kidn of USB devices under VM Fusion and/ or Parallel Desktop I will continue to use Bootcamp.
It is a bit more inconvenient because I can not swicht between Apple US and XP...but it works.
As I said: There are working drivers for XP and for Mac OS for the Garmin 496 GPS. So on those platforms the device is recognized.
But there is some kind of incompatibility with BOTH of the virtual machine(VM & PD)
Best
Frank
I followed the instructions to enable USB logging and now Vista will not even start, I am NOT impressed.
I think I will simply use Bootcamp until such time as this product supports USB devices like it should, this is a Joke!

How will it not start - do you get an error message, a black screen, a BSoD, etc.?
Without getting our hands on this device or a USB log, there's no way we can fix this or even know what's going on.
Just a black screen, I fixed it by restoring the VMWare directory from Time Machine
