iSCSI names, aliases advice needed

Hello, we are currently evaluating an EqualLogic storage array have a server with 2 QLogic 4050c iSCSI adapters connected to it.

I am more familiar with fibre channel storage so wondered if people have any tips for the following, especially those that use the PS series at the moment:

1. Any suggestions as to the iSCSI name and alias. I can see the default values which start with iqn and understand this is a standard, but any suggestions as to the names for the aliases i.e. that come after the :

2. As we are using QLogic cards, the default string is iqn.2000-04.com.qlogic:xxxxxx is this ok leave or should this be changed to the domain name of the company I work for?

3. The EqualLogic target also has an iSCSI name and alias, the default is shown below:

iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:6-8a0900-fff6a0801-af500000226461f6-lun1

Again, any ideas on how to best name the alias or leave the default string of characters after the :

Thanks

2. As we are using QLogic cards, the default string

is iqn.2000-04.com.qlogic:xxxxxx is this ok leave

or should this be changed to the domain name of the

company I work for?

You will see this name e.g. in the log of EQL - I have changed it to my company name and at the end added the esx host name and hba1 or hba2 to recognize the hbas in my esx host.

3. The EqualLogic target also has an iSCSI name and

alias, the default is shown below:

iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:6-8a0900-fff6a0801-af500000

You can't change it - we leave it unchanged.

My advice is Don't Change the IQN names. There are a lot of things that can end up depending on the name being a consistant standard. You run the real risk of everything working fine, and VMWare could make a driver change that requires a standard IQN and once you upgrade all your volumes have issues..... (we saw this with Microsoft last year.)

In the end you'll most likely identify the cards by the IP address you give them. You can also use CHAP (username and password) if that's easier, - this is a good place to use the hostname and card number etc.

Hope this helps
