Distributed Power Management (DPM)

Hi all..,

I wanted to open a posting up on Distributed Power Management (DPM) and see who is currently using this feature, or has implemented it for their clients VI Infrastructure.

How has everyone adjusted their server/host monitoring to accomodate this feature? Usual monitoring tools are obviously affected by seeing ESX hosts become unavailable (according to the monitoring product)

I suppose some monitoring tools might have the capability to have monitoring schedules so they only monitor specific hosts during specific times. If so then then you could configure some ESX hosts not be powered off by DPM, and others configured to be powered off with DPM.

You can therefore have "some" reassurance that there are running ESX hosts, and at the same time have peace of mind knowing that there is potentially only a service outage if those (non DPM) ESX hosts become unavailable.

I am just curious to see what others are doing in light of their monitoring capability...?

The feature is obviously great and after having mentioned this feature to the clients I have worked with they would really like the green credentials and obvious power savings (especially for some of the larger clients with hundreds of servers) however once weighed up the client usually opt's against using the technology due to an increase in potential monitoring issues.

(However for the most part I dont recomend the feature anyway due to it being experimental)

Interested to hear all your comments..

Carl

PS: I realise this feature is still experimental
