Using EVault for system state restores for DR

Hi everyone,

We're just getting started with our implementation of VMware and are already having great success. We're addressing backups and wanted to throw out a scenario for your thoughts/opinions.

Our physical servers now use Evault to backup their data and system state. This has proven troublesome in the past when conducting DR exercises with different hardware. But with the Virtualization layer for the hardware ESX provides we were wondering if this would be easier.

Example: Sun X4450 hardware, ESX 3.5 Enterprise

Create a Windows 2003 file server and install the EVault agent

Backup the files and system state for the new 2003 server

DR:

Dell PowerEdge 6xxx hardware, ESX 3.5 Enterprise

Create a Windows 2003 file server and install the EVault agent

Restore the files and system state from the EVault backup

Reboot.

Will this be able to see past the hardware and enable us to have that server boot up properly without any issues?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and ideas.

Joe

P.S. We are aware that there is a plugin for EVault the will reach into an ESX environment directly and avoid this process above but that costs money we won't have in the budget until next year so this is a short term solution if we can make it work Smiley Happy

We've enabled the EVault (i365) plugin and are using that successfully for DR.

Thanks everyone!
