SQL Server Licensing

Has anyone else received this information?

Microsoft will require Enterprise Edition licensing for all SQL Server

databases running on Virtual Hosts (VMware). This has been discussed at

length with Microsoft executive management. They stand firm in their

requirement for Enterprise Edition.

All VMware servers running

Standard Edition SQL Server (either CPU or CAL based licenses) must be

upgraded to the CPU based Enterprise Edition price model.

This has been presented to the higher ed management for the state of tn.

This is straight of the MS site, this still seem to say that Standard is allows

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/virtualization.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/faq.mspx

according to their own site Enterprise licensing each processor will give inlimited virtualisation rights accross the board. however it implies you can use Standard. so you MS rep that site and ask them to explain the anomally.

Tom,

Thanks for the very helpful reply. I found more than enough examples on the links provided. I will follow-up when I hear what MS has to say about this.

Microsoft announced some changes in August that involve vMotion and SQL Server. Here is an analysis by the Burton Group.

Microsoft also released a document on the topic. Try figuring it out:
