I have VMware ESX 3.5 Server. I have the openfiler-2.3-x86_64.vmdk, openfiler-2.3-x86_64-flat.vmdk, openfiler-2[1].3-x86_64-disc1.iso . I would like to install openfiler on the ESX Server as a VM. I am a newbe with VMware. I have the Infrastructure Client on a WinXP-64 workstation. What are the steps I need to install OpenFiler on the ESX Server? Thanks
Either create a virtual machine with "other (64bit)" and use the .iso file to create a new installation or create a "other (64bit)" Virtual Machine and don't create a new virtual disc but select "use an existing virtual disc" and then select the openfiler-2.3-x86_64.vmdk file. If you can't create/start a 64bit VM then create a "other (32bit)" VM, download the 32Bit openfiler.iso (http://www.openfiler.com) and install from that iso.

There are 10 types of people. Those who understand binary and the rest. And those who understand gray-code.
If I use the vmdk or ISO and power up, then go to the console,
I receive the following errors:
PXE-E51: No DHCP or proxyDHCP offers were received.
PXE-M0F: Operating System not found.
I connected the CD/DVD to the iso image. After the hitting GUI it gives the message: This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU.
I am running Dual Intel Quad Core Processors.
I can only get the x86 iso to work. I am not able to get vmdk files to work.
Do the processors in your ESX server support 64-bit? If not then you wont be able to run 64-bit guests.
Yes, before installing ESX Server I was using it with WinXP64.
What CPU(s) are in the server? I believe you also need Intel VT or AMD-V support to run 64-bit guests.
In the BIOS, I found a setting: Enable Virtualization which allows for x64-iso install. I still cannot use the vmdk files and the IDE drive I have installed doesn't show in the VM BIOS for the OpenFiler VM, only the CDROM drive.
So you have copied the vmdk files up to the ESX server, and when you create the VM you configure it with "Use Existing Disk"?
