Processor Addition Debate

So there is a debate in our office about adding a second vCPU to a windows server, will the server actually see or use the second processor? About half of the department thinks that you have completely rebuild the server in order for the OS to take advantage of the 2nd processor, half think that you don't need to rebuild it but just change the hal to a multiprocessor setup.

Thoughts? Explainations?

Modifying the HAL is sufficient.

I going to go for door number three Alex: Windows, at least 2003, will see the new CPU and handle change to the SNMP HAL and request a reboot.

If its W2K or better, you just need to modify the HAL.
