HP PROLiant DL380R05 with VMware ESXi 3.5

Hi,

I want a to install / setup a HP server (DL350R05) with VMware ESXi. It seems the sollution for my problem.I want to setup the following configuration:

- HP PROLIANT DL380R05 - XEON 5420 2.5GHz 2048MB SA-P400-256MB- BBWC 8xSFF DVD/CDRW (1 processor)

- 2x HP 72.8-GB 15K Hot Plug SFF SAS disk

- 2x HP 146-GB 10k Hot Plug SFF SAS disk

Now i want to host 2 VMware images. Is it possible to control / setup the disk array with VMware ESXi.(by this i mean create array's and things)

So i can configure / setup / dedicate a VMware image to a disk set?

For instance:

2x 72.8 GB (RAID1 mirror) and the 2x 146 GB (RAID1 mirror) so i can place / install 2 images dedicated to the RAID set(s).

Anyone has expirience with this?

Unlike the full ESX installation, you cannot install the HP Array Configuration Utility on ESXi. You will need to boot the system with SmartStart in order to configure arrays (or set up the arrays from the limited RBSU utility.)

Hi,

Thanks! Ok, so that does answer my question i guess. So if i make the array's / disk sets then i can access them as 1 disk right? And then i can configure the VMware machines right?

Yes and no... you'll probably want your 72GB 15k disks in their own Array, and the 146GB 10k disks in another. If you put them all together, you'll get 4x72GB raw (and either 3x72GB or 2x72GB usable, depending on which RAID option you choose), and possibly some odd performance figures due to mixing 10k and 15k disks.

My recommendation would thus be:

Array A: 2x 72GB 15k

Array B: 2x 146GB 10k

Create one logical drive on each of these arrays, using RAID1.
