install vmware server affect net/io performance on a linux host?

    lasterra Novice

I'm an vmware newbie. I see that vmware install new drivers on the my linux host. I have some services on this host (postgresql database) and i want to know if this drivers will affect postgresql perfermance.

If i stop all vmware virtual machines the performance will be the same for the host? Does services installed on the host use this drivers or this drivers are only used by the virtual machines?

      Regards.

The drivers on the host are used for making virtualisation possible

VMware must access the host-kernel and so there must be drivers for the running kernel

All other virtualizing software has such drivers (virtualbox as sample)

The same happen in the guest with the vmware-tools to use optimized communication between VMware-Server and Guest such as vmxnet for fast networking.

yes, i understand that drivers are used by vmware server on the host, but if for example i configured vmxnet on the host, will the other services, in my case postgresql, use this drivers? This driver will optimized the network connection for the VM.. but how affect this on other host services?

            Regards.

The drivers are simply for vmware-communication

All other hardware MUST simply use the right driver for the hardware

              How should a intel1000 run with vmxnet-driver?

While a virtual machine is running performance will degrade for local services in correlation to the amount of IO and processor time being used by the virtual machine.  It is no different than running a large application on your machine, everything else will start to hit wait times on getting things queued to the CPU or to IO processes.  That being said, depending on the size of the system, you may not notice a real drop in performance even with a virtual machine running.

When a virtual machine is not running, you shouldn't notice any drop in performance, although there have been some issues identified around NFS by another forum member that may impact you as well.  This seems to be an annomaly in a way, in that it shouldn't be doing what it is doing but it is, so you may not experience this at all.

I have the server on my laptop, and unless I am running a virtual machine, I don't even notice it is there, and I run DB2 and Websphere on this machine as well and they don't seem to be impacted by the server just sitting there.
