Blackberry Issues Vista Host WinXP Guest

Hi,

I've searched and see posts where others have had the same problem on older versions of VMware but I haven't found a solution. I'm running a Vista x32 host with WinXP SP3 guest in VMware Player 2.0.4 with Blackberry Desktop Manager 4.5; the VM was created with VMware Workstation 6. I connect a RIM Blackberry 8820 to my usb port (no drivers on the host), but all I see is "Research In Motion Removable Disk" in my usb connections on the guest; it doesn't show as a smart phone. When I try to back up my device, the backup starts, but then stops. The SD Memory card (and wifi) is disabled by IT Policy so I don't have a storage card on the phone. I tried changing the vmx file as some posts suggested, but no luck. In device manager I do see BlackBerry Smartphone under USB Controllers.

Anyone get a blackberry connected via usb? TIA.

Regards-Michael G.

Just wanted to update this message. Unfortunately, it is a problem with VMware not being able to work with composite usb devices. There isn't a relaible way to make the usb connection connect to the blackberry as a smartphone and not a usb memory device. The solution was to load XP on an old laptop to get it working. Since it worked on an older blackberry (with a memory card slot), I'm not sure why it changed with the newer model as it is the same series 8800 and 8820, but according to the blackberry site it is a known problem.
