VI3.Blueprint Migration Workshop

Version 1

    Introduction

The Migration Workshop develops the process for migrating physical servers into virtual machines. Under discussion is the targets identified in the VI3 Virtual Pipeline, and the methods to perform the migrations - what tools, what kind of schedule, who can do the work.

Use this document as the template or framework for your migration workshop and adapt accordingly to the infrastructure identified for your migration.

    Intended Audience

VMware Certified Professionals (VCP), internal Server Infrastructure Team members and, where applicable, a Technical Project Manager responsible for planning and managing the deliverable expectations.

    Outline

The role and shape of this document assumes the VMware Infrastructure either has been implemented or is in a Proof of Concept evolution and it is recommended the VI3 Requirements Specifications and VI3 Virtual Pipeline documents have been reviewed.

There are 3 mandatory categories to be discussed within the workshop:

    • Source candidates

    • Transit method

    • Target environment

The purpose of this workshop is not to spend valuable time ascertaining the hardware and application profile of each candidate but to summarise how it will be done, who will do it and importantly when.

A diagram at the end of the document overviews the key category overlaps.

    Source candidates

    For this category consider:

    • Candidates

      • Have all the candidates been identified from the VI3 Pipeline work?

      • Who will approve the final candidate list and schedule of work?

      • Who has physical access to the candidates?

      • Who has logical access to the candidates?

    • Timetabling

      • Who will draw up the migration schedule?

      • Who will approve the migration schedule?

      • Who will communicate the migration schedule to the project sponsor?

      • Who will communicate the migration schedule to the business?

    • Overall responsibility

      • Who is responsible for managing this planning stage?

      • Who will report the progress of this planning stage to the sponsor?

    • Environment control

      • Who ensures existing environmental change methodologies are adhered to?

    Transit method

    For this category consider:

    • Tools

      • What tool(s) will be used for the migration?

      • What is the preferred method of data transfer?

    • Resource

      • Who will be performing the migrations?

      • Will extra resource be required?

        • If so, will this be internal or external?

      • Who has physical access to the candidates?

      • Who has logical access to the candidates?

      • Who has physical access to the target environment?

      • Who has logical access to the target environment?

    • Data integrity

      • Are the individuals performing this migration permitted to have access to the data being migrated?

      • What data transfer guidelines need to be followed to ensure the project complies with business practice?

      • Who is responsible for maintaining and evidencing this compliance?

    • Overall responsibility

      • Who is responsible for managing this planning stage?

      • What are the escalation steps in the event a migration...

        • ...will exceed the communicated downtime?

        • ...a migration has failed?

        • ...causes the target environment unplanned outage?

      • Who will report the progress of this stage to the sponsor?

    • Environment control

      • Who ensures existing environmental change methodologies are adhered to?

    Target environment

    For this category consider:

    • Environment

      • Will the migration of candidates go to the same VMware Infrastructure?

      • Will there be a staging process?

      • Who supports the target environment(s)?

      • Who supports the migrated candidate(s)?

    • Handover and warranty

      • Who is responsible for agreeing the handover procedures?

      • Who is responsible for signing off the completion of a migration?

      • Who is responsible for signing off the business acceptance of a migrated candidate?

      • Who is responsible for defining a warranty period for a single or group of candidates?

    • Overall responsibility

      • Who is responsible for managing this stage?

      • What are the escalation steps in the event a migrated candidate...

        • ...stops functioning correctly?

        • ...experiences outages for extended periods of time compared to the original?

        • ...causes the target environment unplanned outage?

      • Who will report the progress of this stage to the sponsor?

    • Environment control

      • Who ensures existing environmental change methodologies are adhered to?
