  • VMware vSphere Blog: Which vSCSI controller should I choose for performance? (https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=11658)I wrote a blog article in Oct 2010 on this same topic that is still frequently referenced today so I figure it was due for an update. So what should I choose as my vSCSI controller and what are the differences between them? First, it’s important to remind everyone that when you select the Guest OS for a new virtual machine this automatically makes a selection for which vSCSI controller to use based on what drivers are available in the OS distribution.  So be sure to select the correct Guest OS to…
  • VMware Hands On Labs Blog: The Many Clouds of Hands-on Labs (http://blogs.vmware.com/hol/?p=646)Behind the scenes of VMware’s Hands-on Labs, there is a lot of “care and feeding” of the lab infrastructure, manuals, and the lab environments themselves. You might be surprised at how much opportunity there is for things to stop working, even in environments that have been precisely configured and then effectively frozen in time. For example, SSL certificates and password expiration policies are the bane of my existence… On a call at the end of 2013, I demonstrated some of my maintenance…

A business continuity solution that utilizes the virtual infrastructure, like the one VMware offers, can greatly simplify the process, though IT still needs to understand how all the pieces of their business continuity…

They can be used to drive consensus among stakeholders, bridge strategic and operating plans, and provide a framework for multiyear investment decisions. But the current state of practice leaves a lot to be desired. According to a recent poll from best practices firm CEB [1] , 70 percent of IT professionals are either ‘somewhat’ or ‘highly dissatisfied’ with their roadmaps; only 3 percent are highly satisfied. • VMware for Public Sector Blog: IPv6 and VMware Products (http://blogs.vmware.com/publicsector/?p=237)VMware is planning to extend support of IPv6 to the ESXi and vCenter Server management network, vSphere management features, and the vCloud Suite over the next several years.  We are doing this in two steps, expected to start in 2015. First, support a pure IPv6 stack to ensure product performance and quality with no dependencies on IPv4.  Second, support dual stack. The effort to support IPv6 will take place over multiple years, and we are working toward building quality VMware products running and…

From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, hope you are enjoying the final week of January 2014. It always seems to be such a short month because of the holidays and is over very quickly. For many it;s back to university and school time in your family and I suspect the traffic and transport will start to get back to normal again, no more easy drive to work.

This week I have been sent some information on the new updates VCP5-DCV exam which has just been released and I thought I would highlight this exam as for many it is the gateway into the world of VMware certification.

By Michael Hubbard Cloud technology has matured in recent years, offering cost optimization, security, and quality of service for the full range of enterprise requirements, not just tactical needs. Yet many businesses have adopted cloud services in an ad hoc fashion with IT organizations tending to focus on the part of a cloud transformation that comes naturally to them—the technology. As your company grows you might…

From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, welcome to the VMware Newsletter 2014 edition. This is now our 6th consecutive year bringing you all of the best weekly news from the word of VMware. I hope you all had a good festive season and managed to spend time with you family and friends and have a bit of a break. Well it is a new year and I am always excited about what the year will bring. Anyone want to send me their predictions, please do so and I will make a list that we can compare next year.

For those that might be new to the newsletter a reminder of what we provide. Every week (or at least most weeks) we collate the best from around the web that is related to VMware and put that together into a weekly digest so that you are able to easily keep up with all of the news and happenings in the VMware world. We also try and include local events and other local information for you but this is on a regional basis and may not be provided in your region. We also provide a summary of the latest KB articles which we always suggest you take note of and discuss with your operational team and your TAM to ensure there are no potential issues you need to be aware of that may affect your environment.

I really look forward to bringing you all of the VMware news for 2014 and I wish you a successful year working with our amazing technology.

Don’t forget to keep in touch, send me an email with any views or potential items to include to nisserow@vmware.com.

From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, well this is the last “official” newsletter of 2013 before we take our annual break for the holiday season until January. Depending on the news there may be an interim newsletter that I will still deliver.

It has been a really good week for me and also a very sad week. Firstly my birthday this week, always a fun time spent with friends. I did work on my Birthday, my customers are awesome and I was so happy to see them as I have been with many of them for almost 5 years so they are considered very close colleagues.

It has also been a very sad week with the passing of Nelson Mandela. As many of you will be aware I was born in South Africa and moved to Australia only 8 years ago. I have written a small blog post titled “Remembering Nelson Mandela” if you wish to read it http://neil-isserow.blogspot.com.au/2013/12/remembering-nelson-mandela.html.

I wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe festive season. If I do not speak to you before I hope you are able to enjoy some time off with your family and friends and have an awesome festive season.

My best wishes to all of you and your families over this festive season. It has been my privilege to bring you another year of newsletters and I look forward to my 6th year at VMware and our 6th year of weekly newsletters.

Warm Wishes

(http://blogs.vmware.com/vcloud/?p=3033)It’s not that IT employees are especially cynical, but their finely tuned “fluff detectors” tend to activate when a fuzzily-defined technology term starts appearing everywhere.  The sudden proliferation of words like “Cloud,” “Big Data,” or “as a Service” invites suspicion that marketing folks have latched on to the term as a way to attract attention to their products and services.  Perhaps there’s more sizzle than meat. So what about “software-defined,” the latest darling of the…

From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, the final month of 2013 is here. It has been such an exciting and challenging year for me and I am really looking forward to winding down during the festive season and taking a short break. As we head into December we only have a few newsletters remaining. At this stage we will be on our annual Newsletter Break from the 2nd week of December until the 2nd week of January which means that next week will be the last newsletter of 2013.

Last week I was privileged to host our TAM customers in Queensland for our annual TAM Day. This is for me the highlight of my year and a day that I get to share with all of our fantastic TAM customers in a relaxed environment where we get to see some of the awesome new solutions that VMware has and also take the time to relax and chat. This year was fantastic as we presented 4 sessions including our new vCloud Suite and how it can help our customers on their hybrid cloud journey.

I look forward to speaking to you next week for the final newsletter of 2013.

Have a fantastic week.

    From the editors virtual desk

There has been a lot of news lately around Virtual Desktop’s and Desktop as a Service (DAAS). I am very keen on the virtual desktop environment as many of you know and find this to be a very interesting area. For those of you that are not aware in October we acquired one of the leading providers of DAAS technology, Desktone (http://www.vmware.com/au/company/news/releases/vmw-euc-daas-10-15-13.html). Take a look at this really exciting announcement and what it will bring for our VMware customers.

Have a wonderful week and I look forward to speaking to you for the final month of 2013 next week. We have only a few more newsletters to go before 2014.
