VMware Newsletter 5.43

From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, the end of 2013 is fast approaching but I still have so much to do. It always seems like the business period just prior to the holidays and this year has been no exception. I have had a really good week spending time digesting some of the announcements around PAAS from pivotal and how it will impact the marketplace. I have also spent much time contemplating the operational requirements and the complexities involved for an organisation that has workloads in their private data centre and in the cloud. The governance issues are one thing but the ongoing operational management including performance is something else. I was in a customer meeting this week where we discussed the “Single Pane of Glass” for operations management and I commented that this has been the goal of IT Operations forever. I did not see that using current generation solutions would solve this problem and that I believed many vendors were using outdated technology built for a single service model in a more physical world and trying to bend it into a dynamic clue based virtual world.

I have a busy week, the TAM program is hosting a Webex this week which you (as a TAM customer) would have received an invite for if you are in our region. I am also very busy planning for the local Brisbane TA day which is now in it’s fifth consecutive year. I will provide more info on this even in the coming newsletters.

Have a great week everyone.

VMware Accelerate: The 4 Components of a Service-Focused Culture (http://blogs.vmware.com/accelerate/?p=1480)Author: Alex Salicrup I have made bold observations in my recent blogs about the need for a cultural shift to that of a service-driven culture. This is a culture with a strong focus on customer needs, customer services, and meeting deadlines. This type of culture also allows the IT organization to scale and adapt to changing business needs rather than rigidly following old strategies. Although a cultural shift like this might seem an insurmountable task, I’ve seen it occur—and faster than you might…

From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, been a very hectic week for me this week. It seems like so much is going on before we head into what I hope will be a quieter period over December. I think this happens every year and I just forget that it does and am not prepared. I was at our local VMUG this week which was excellent and something I really enjoy. I look forward to our final meeting of the year in December and then a break until the January kick off again.

I hope your week has been good and you enjoy this weeks newsletter.

    VMware Newsletter 5.41

Posted by nisserow Nov 22, 2013

    From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, been a pretty hectic week for me with november creeping (no pun intended) up on us like it has. I was fortunate to attend a local session on the new vCloud Suite 5.5 this week which went through the many facets of the suite and some of the features of the new individual technologies provided. The ones that struck me as most important for me to get to grips with are the vCAC solution for cloud automation, the new features in vCops with much better integration with many other technologies to provide a single pane of glass to manage the operations of a complex environment, possibly spanning private and public cloud infrastructures as well as some newer technologies that are not part of the suite but have requirements on it such as the IT Business Management suite.

If you haven’t had a chance to take a look at this I urge you to do so as it could make a huge difference to your environment with a lot less effort than expected.

VMware vSphere Blog: Three Hosts, two VSAN Datastores! (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=10748)For those of you who have been testing out VSAN , you may realize that a VSAN cluster creates one scale-out datastore across participating hosts. Well, while working on an internal Virtual SAN lab setup, and following my colleague William Lam’s  excellent vCenter bootstrap instructions,   I got into a situation where I had a single node vsanDatastore with my vCenter Server Appliance residing on it, and a VSAN enabled vSphere cluster with a second vsanDatastore(1). So how do I add my single node VSAN…

VMware Support Insider: Virtual Flash Feature in vSphere 5.5 (http://blogs.vmware.com/kb/?p=5850)With the vSphere 5.5 release a few weeks back a new feature called Virtual Flash was introduced. We put together this video which provides an overview of this new Virtual Flash feature  and its benefits in a vSphere environment. In essence, Virtual Flash allows you to accelerate virtual machine performance through the use of local SSD (Solid State) disks, which serve flash memory cache to chosen virtual machines running on the ESXi host. Virtual Flash Read Cache can supply low latency for extreme latency…

VMware End User Computing: Moving Beyond IOPs for VDI (http://blogs.vmware.com/euc/?p=4111)By Courtney Burry, Director of Product Marketing, and Tristan Todd, Reference Architect Engineer, End-User Computing, VMware When it comes to desktop virtualization, one of the places you will end up spending a lot of your time is on storage planning and design. Given that 50%+ of the cost associated with most VDI deployments comes from storage—it’s definitely worth the time and effort to do your homework in advance. But wading through the sea of storage vendors can often leave you wondering what’s…

Budgeting for a new or unfamiliar project can be one of the hardest things to do.  If you budget too much, you risk not getting approval. If you budget too little, you risk losing out on the right solution. Budgeting for cloud-based DR can be especially hard, too, if you don’t have experience consuming the cloud and understanding it’s pay-as-you-go economics. If you’re looking at 2014 spending right now, you may be struggling to…

The looming April 2014 end of support date for Microsoft Windows XP and the requisite migration off to Windows 7 or 8.x presents an opportunity for IT to do just that—if IT leaders put in place the right end-user strategy. This strategy should address issues such as the consumerisation of IT, the…

    VMware Newsletter 5.40

Posted by nisserow Nov 22, 2013

    From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, I am really excited to be attending our annual VMware vForum along with thousands of other enthusiastic virtualisation specialists next week. This is the 5th event I have attended as a VMware employee and for me it is the best event of the year and such an awesome way to end a stellar year. I love being able to interact with the myriad of customers and partners at the VMware stand, discuss in depth technology issues with them and show them the amazing solutions we have to offer.

This year as usual I will be presenting  session in what is called the All Access Pass area. This is an area for paid delegates and where we provide in depth sessions by subject matter experts in a much smaller forum where delegates can interact more with questions. I am looking forward to presenting my session details of which are below.

If you are at vForum this year in Sydney please send me an email to let me know and stop by the VMware stand and say hi.

And of course it is not too late to register and attend - http://info.vmware.com/content/APAC_ANZ_vForum

This week's newsletter has a focus on the coverage from VMworld Europe and is therefore an extended edition, lots to read and digest from an awesome event.

    My Session details:

    Date: Monday 21 October

    Time: 1420 - 1500
Title: Pro-active solutions to ensure your VMware environment is stable and available 100% of the time

Synopsis: You rely on your entire enterprise being reliable and available. Running it on a VMware vSphere platform provides many benefits but there are still a number of tasks and solutions that we can use to ensure that everything stays up and working reliably. In this session, we will take a look at available solutions and pro-active tasks to assist with monitoring the environment, health assessments, regular benchmarking and metrics, patch management and working with VMware KB articles as tools to ensure your environment stays reliable and well maintained.

VROOM!: SEsparse Shows Significant Improvements over VMFSsparse (http://blogs.vmware.com/performance/?p=1616)Limited amounts of physical resources can make large-scale virtual infrastructure deployments challenging. Provisioning dedicated storage space to hundreds of virtual machines can become particularly expensive. To address this VMware vSphere 5.5 provides two sparse storage techniques, namely VMFSparse and SEsparse. Running multiple VMs using sparse delta-disks with a common parent virtual disk brings down the required amount of physical storage making large-scale deployments manageable. SEsparse was…

VMware vSphere Blog: Microsoft Operating System Time Sources and Virtual Hardware 10 (https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=10595)More recent versions of Microsoft operating systems contain the ability to detect if they are running virtualized or not.  This is accomplished through the checking of a CPUID hypervisor-present bit presented by the VMware virtual hardware.  Since virtual hardware 7, VMware has implemented this interface, which is required by the Microsoft SVVP program. FACT: Did you know VMware ESX 3.5u2 was the world’s first hypervisor to be qualified under the Microsoft SVVP program? However, as Microsoft continues…

On this third and final official day of VMworld Europe 2013, many started the day off with hands on labs (HoL) at 8:00am when they opened (which would later facilitate the 35,000 powered on virtual machines that the HoL hit later that day). VMware vSphere Blog: Virtual SAN & Disk Groups (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=10588)I had a number of questions and queries on VSAN over the past week at VMworld 2013 in Europe. Many of these questions related to the role of disk groups. I will try to answer a number of them in this post. The first question is what purpose do disk groups serve? Disk groups may be considered a container in which a relationship between SSD/PCIe flash devices and magnetic disks are formed. When a virtual machine is created, it is placed on magnetic disks/hard disks. However its I/O is accelerated through an…

In particular, networking pros are worried that increasingly advanced automation will soon put them out of a job. This is just one of several common points of resistance to the big changes happening in IT. I want to talk about four of them and provide some advice on how to reframe the discussion for clients, colleagues, and…

And, because internally we’ve solved real-world issues that resonate with many of our customers, we’re now in a position to share how to solve…

This was a timely announcement as our performance engineering team just released some very impressive VDI numbers using VMware’s new Virtual SAN storage system and View Planner. In a nutshell, a 3 node VSAN cluster could host in the region of 90-100 desktops per host. More importantly the team observed linear…

    VMware Newsletter 5.39

In a nutshell, a 3 node VSAN cluster could host in the region of 90-100 desktops per host. More importantly the team observed linear…
