VMware Consulting Blog: The Secret to Getting Security to Say ‘Yes’ (http://blogs.vmware.com/consulting/?p=852)By Richard Rees, Security & Compliance Architect, VMware Professional Services My post last week about the NSA and hybrid cloud I shared an important equation from the security world: Trust = Visibility + Control. Rethink IT: Reports of vCloud Director’s death exaggerated (http://blogs.vmware.com/rethinkit/?p=460)Borrowing from  Mark Twain’s retort to newspaper stories of his death , reports of the death of vCloud Director are exaggerated. vCloud Director (vCD) is alive and well and now 100% focused on the needs of the service provider market, where it powers more than 250 public clouds in the vCloud Powered and vCloud Datacenter programs in addition to VMware’s own vCloud Hybrid Service . We’ll continue to integrate vCD functions into vCenter and vCloud Automation Center, as previously announced . With this…

VMware End User Computing: Have You Ever Cheated on a School Test? (http://blogs.vmware.com/euc/?p=3653)by Geoffrey Murase, Solutions Marketing, VMware The incentive to cheat is highly correlated with what is at stake.  For example, in preschool, it’s pretty rare to see a child copy another classmate’s finger painting because not much is at stake.  However, in high school, getting good grades means getting into a good college.  That’s where I was first exposed to the temptation of cheating on a test.  I recall one class where the teacher gave the same multiple choice test every  year.  Students…

VMware Consulting Blog: The Snowden Leak: A Windfall for Hybrid Cloud? (http://blogs.vmware.com/consulting/?p=824)By Richard Rees Interest in hybrid cloud has risen since Edward Snowden’s leak in May revealing vast surveillance operations by the US government, according to VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger and COO Carl Eschenbach during a VMworld Q&A last week. That’s not surprising, since hybrid clouds allow businesses to keep their data in their own house and out of the prying eyes of government. That’s undoubtedly attractive for foreign companies doing business with or in the United States, since the US…

VROOM!: IPv6 performance improvements in vSphere 5.5 (http://blogs.vmware.com/performance/?p=1407)Many of our customers use IPv6 networks in their datacenters for a variety of reasons. We expect that many more will transition from IPv4 to IPv6 to reap the large address range and other benefits that IPv6 provides. Keeping this in mind, we have worked on a number of performance enhancements for the way that vSphere 5.5 manages IPv6 network traffic. Some new features that we have implemented include: • TCP Checksum Offload: For Network Interface Cards (NICs) that support this feature, the computation of…

The paper shows that power savings of up to 20% can be achieved in vSphere5.5 by using industry standard SPEC benchmarks. The paper also describes some of the best practices to follow when using HPM. However, virtualizing all infrastructure does not constitute a software-defined data center (SDDC), and that’s key for executives to understand. When control of…
