VMware Newsletter 5.26

Posted by nisserow Jul 28, 2013

FROM THE EDITORS VIRTUAL DESK

As I write this I am in the middle of building my new Horizon lab. I hope to have Horizon View, Mirage and Workspace up and running in the new lab by the time you are reading this weeks newsletter. I know many if you have been following what is my very slow progress with this task, with a number of false starts but with some spare time on my hands over the weekend my plans have started to come together.

It actually started earlier this week when I was privileged to join a number of my customers at the VMware conference in Brisbane and more specifically at the first Architects Bootcamp which was on our End User Computing solutions, namely the Horizon Suite. This kick started my lab into high gear after spending the day learning about our awesome tech and then having discussions later in the week with customers around this.

I will keep everyone updated but thus far progress and learning is on track and I am having loads of fun learning the new solutions.

You will also notice a few subtle changes to the newsletter from this week. Keen observers will notice a slight change in the formatting and also that then clickable titles also have the proper URL in them as well for reference or to make sure you can always get to the link from any device.

I hope these changes make the newsletter a bit easier to read and enjoy each week.

Kind Regards

FROM THE EDITORS VIRTUAL DESK

Hi everyone, after such a hectic and exciting week last week this week has been rather more relaxing with a day off on Wednesday as a bit of a treat. I have been making some inroads on my learning path for VCP-DT and hope to have a lab running next week or so, watch this space. I have tried to expand the newsletter a bit more so even articles more related to VMware technology are being included,

His week I again have a guest post on security which really has become news for everyone with all the goings on in the spying world. Keeping our data and personal details safe and secure has become an important task. Read on for some further interesting information.

Have a great week.

FEATURED ARTICLE

Utilising untapped resources to increase security

Customers have often been so focused on virtualising their server infrastructure that they have overlooked the other modules that are available to them.

Virtualising Security

Security for virtual environments needs to be adaptive and dynamic. This means that we need to promote employing products like vShield Endpoint so that we can offload Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware onto a dedicated virtual appliance, which increases security to the host and performance to the VM's.

The vShield Endpoint module is one module that is often overlooked by organisations because they think that their physical security appliances are performing the security role. It is also part of vSphere 5.1, so it can form part of any security strategy.

The best practise for securing the virtual environment is to have the security policy follow theapplication that needs protection. vShield App is designed to do just this function and will follow the application as it moves from host to host or cloud to host.

VMware for Small-Medium Business Blog: New Smart Bundle Solutions From HP and VMware Keep Virtualization Simple and AffordableVirtualization has been around long enough to be considered a “mature” technology, and at this point many organizations have taken advantage of virtualization to reduce costs, improve application availability and simplify IT management, among much else. A service catalog is available for customers to pick up and request services from. Each service or set of services is managed by the “service manager/owner” role. VMware Newsletter 5.24

Posted by nisserow Jul 12, 2013

FROM THE EDITORS VIRTUAL DESK

Well what a surprising week it was. I have been at VMware for 4 and a half years now and really love my role as a TAM. For a while now I have had the objective to meet the requirements to become a senior TAM. This week my manager sent through a note to everyone that I had been promoted. This was a very personal achievement for me and working with my manager to achieve this has been a pleasure. I have really learnt a lot at VMware over the past 4 years and enjoy every day I am there, this just makes it even sweeter so a big thank you to my Manager, all of the TAMs I work with and of course everyone else who helped me achieve this.

So that's all I have for you this week, my acceptance speech to show my gratitude

We have a great newsletter for you this week so please enjoy.

Kind Regards

Neil Isserow

A service catalog is available for customers to pick up and request services from. Each service or set of services is managed by the “service manager/owner” role. VMware Virtualization Management Blog: Cloud Automation ROI – Control Resource Usage without Slowing Service DeliveryOne of the challenges of virtualization for many companies is less control over the provisioning of IT services compared to physical servers. In fact, the majority of companies we have worked with readily admit they have over allocated their resources by 20% or more. Those companies enforcing governance over resource consumption either have relatively small, static environments or strict, manually enforced processes with much longer than average service delivery times.  Therefore, it is far more…

VMware Newsletter 5.23

Posted by nisserow Jul 12, 2013

FROM THE EDITORS VIRTUAL DESK

This is it the final newsletter of the first half of 2013. Yikes I can't believe we are half way through the year already. It has been such a great half for me personally and I feel as if I have achieved so much in my personal life and career this half. I certainly hope that you have too.

One of my goals for the first half which I will admit I considered a stretched goal was to do my desktop certification. Those that follow this newsletter will know that I have struggled to just dedicate enough time to this task and as a result I did not write my desktop exam rather opting to do this later in the year. I will keep you all posted in the progress.

As many of you know I publish this newsletter each week on my iPad Mini. This has in the past year become my life, I spend more time on the mini than any other device and see no reason for this to end anytime soon. So many have questioned how I am able to work just using an iPad but it is really very easy. Firstly anything that is really good on a mini I use the device for exclusively such as reviewing documents, web browsing and news. Next if I need a full desktop I turn to my trusty VMware View desktop from my iPad as the client. Finally anything that cannot be done on the mini I use my MacBook Pro for. This tends to be less than 20 percent of the time now. I am totally converted and love it. Thanks Apple and VMware.

Kind Regards

VMware Newsletter 5.22

From the editors Virtual Desk

Hi Everyone well almost the end of the first half of 2013. I certainly hope thus far it has been productive for you. For those that follow the newsletter and VMware in general you will no doubt have seen how many releases, updates and articles we have contributed to the community. This has also been an excellent half year for me personally with the completion of my IAAS exam which was a major goal for my learning and certification objectives.

I have had a small amount of time this week to start my lab up again and get some View practice which has been really good. I am really keen to get my desktop certification and find the desktop virtualisation environment very exciting right now and definitely on the up.

Enjoy the newsletter and the final week of the half year, as I write this it is the shortest day of the year so it only gets better and hopefully a bit warmer from here.

Best Wishes

In this case VLAN(4) and VLAN(49). vmk0 was used for ESXi management - with a default gateway of x.x.4.254 When the user added vmk1 - the host would become disconnected, he removed vmk1 - the host reconnected to the…

Security in VMware Virtual AppliancesToday I got a reminder of a post I have been meaning to write about security best practices and VMware Virtual Appliances. A question was raised on the VMTN community VCSA - what is the default "upgrade" user for? That is a very legitimate question!! Giving a user all rights with no password can become an issue. But in this case since it is used (most probably) for the purpose of the upgrade of the VCSA from version to version - then it might OK (or not… ). Which leads straight into the next…

VMware Newsletter 5.21

Posted by nisserow Jul 12, 2013

From the editors Virtual Desk

I have booked my desktop exam. Yes it s true I have and the reason for this is that my exam voucher expires at the end of June. I really hope I get some extra study time between now and the exam but I am really going to try and pass, or write again in Q3 I suppose.

It is nearing the end of the quarter, and nearly half way through the year. This is always an unusually busy time for us and I am trying to fulfil all of my obligations to both customers and VMware as best as I can but it moves us into an exciting phase with vm world and other events and I hope product launches and updates for us to look forward to.

Enjoy the newsletter everyone and feel free to get in touch.

Best Wishes
