VMware Newsletter 5.20

Posted by nisserow Jun 12, 2013

From the editors Virtual Desk

Hi everyone, this week we have a really interesting featured article on security which is something I think that has been at the top of many CEO and corporations minds lately and has also been in the news and definitely something to take seriously. The article is around a service that is offered in our region and has been developed with key VMware teams over the past year or so. Please read on below and let your TAM or Account rep know if you would like more info.

I would also like to point your attention to one of our TAM guest bloggers, Christian Wickham who has contributed an article for our TAM Blog. The article is below and well worth a read.

Best Wishes

FEATURED ARTICLE

Security Implications for vSphere hosts and Guests

The frequency and sophistication of hacking attacks against organisations in our region has increased markedly over the past year. These attacks have compromised Australian and New Zealand Government sites and both enterprise and SME businesses.

The attacks are being launched by two main groups, State sponsored Actors and OrganisedCyber Criminals.

The State sponsored actors have two main goals, the first of which is to extract military and strategic intelligence from Governments, the second goal is to steal Intellectual Property and designs from private and public companies. China has also been responsible for stealing pricing strategies from companies like BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals.

Organised Cyber Criminals are basically looking for any means to make money. They often achieve thisby stealing bank account information, productdesigns that they can sell to third parties and more recently in Australia Ransomware has become the new opportunity.

So, What does that all mean to us?

The virtualisation of systems in Australia is the highest in the world and this means that hackers will be actively testing the security of hosts and VM's. As we all know, VMware products have been fairly secure with few vulnerabilities but the guest O/S's that we need to employ don't all have a good security history.

The VMware vSphere Security Check is a specialised VMware security scan that has been developed to directly examine vSphere hosts and their guest VM's.

The VMware vSphere Security Check is conducted by deploying a purpose-built VMware security appliance which is specifically customised with the latest industry standard security assessment and vulnerability testing tools.  A Security consultant will scan and expertly analyse your vSphere vCenter Server, ESX/ESXi hosts and Guest OS images to develop a comprehensive security assessment report which identifies any critical operational and security risks discovered within your environment. This targeted Virtual Environment scanning service is a unique product offering from VMware Australia and is available for Australian and New Zealand customers.

This service is a collaborative process where aVMware consultant will work with your team to

understand your unique security risk profile and provide guidance on the current security vulnerabilities. Working together with your team, the consultant will provide actionable remediation steps and recommendations to secure your virtual infrastructure.

VMware Accelerate: The On-Demand Services EffectAuthor: Michael Francis  A business model describes the rationale of how an organisation creates, delivers, and captures value . 1 When I consider the way on-demand services has changed business models, I think of the traditional retail model, which was a bricks-and-mortar store with trained staff to sell the goods. The value proposition—what was really being sold—would be the variety of goods combined with the knowledge of the sales team. For example, a video store of the ’90s provided me with the…

VMware Cloud Ops Blog: Transforming IT Services is More Effective with Org ChangesBy: Kevin Lees My last post examined what an IT service looks like in practice . But what if you’ve only gone as far as deciding that you need to transform IT? How do you act on that decision? VMware vCloud Blog: Get Started with the VMware Cloud Credits Purchasing Program Today! In today’s economy, it’s of paramount importance for businesses to be able to scale rapidly in order to meet changing business demands.  However, it may be difficult for IT to meet a business unit’s requirements because of slow provisioning times. The business will look for alternatives to ensure they are able to meet deadlines, leading to rogue spend as some public cloud providers can make it easy for the business to side-step IT, swipe a credit card and consume cloud. This can be a big problem for…

VMware End User Computing: Giving PCs New PurposeBy: Courtney Burry, Director of Product Marketing, End User Computing, VMware Simplifying desktop management is still a very compelling reason for organizations across the globe to make the move to desktop virtualization. VMware Newsletter 5.19

From the editors Virtual Desk

Hi everyone, I had had a busy few weeks and have been kept busy with some additional proof of concepts at my customers which I have really enjoyed. I have also managed a few critical SRs and this has reminded me of the value of our support organisation and how much value they can bring when teamed up with a TAM at an account. The addition of the TAM brings many benefits and one of these is the assistance and management of support cases and escalations directly with both the customer and VMware support ensuring that both parts are provided clarity throughout the process in terms of their obligations and responsibilities to ensure a successful resolution for all.

Onwards to all of this weeks news.

Best Wishes

  • VMware Cloud Ops Blog: The Illusion of Unlimited CapacityBy: Andy Troup  I was at a customer workshop last week, and I used a phrase that I’ve used a few times to describe one of the crucial capabilities of a successful cloud computing service, namely “The Illusion of Unlimited Capacity.” It got a bit of a reaction, and people seemed to understand the concept quite easily. So apart from its sounding quite cool (maybe I should get out more), why do I keep on using this term? Well, in cloud computing, we all know that there is no such thing as unlimited…

VMware vCloud Blog: Solution to a “Mostly Cloudy” ProblemThis is a guest post from vCloud Service Provider, Logicalis . By:  Steve Pelletier Have you ever had an IT project that you thought would be ideal to put into a public cloud except for one or two requirements that cloud providers just can’t seem to meet?  I like to refer to these as “mostly cloudy” projects.  As Logicalis has developed its public cloud infrastructure, we’ve had many customers approach us with just this type of project.  An increasingly large proportion of those clients are…

VMware Cloud Ops Blog: What Do We Mean by IT Services in the Cloud Era?By Kevin Lees You hear it all the time from cloud evangelists: instead of delivering based on projects, IT should now be delivering around a common set of services. It’s not a new idea—but cloud computing promises to finally make it a reality. Before we get too excited, though, we should ask: what do we actually mean by cloud services? That’s not something cloud advocates always make clear. So here’s an example: The other week I was talking with a customer who runs a cloud that supports…

VMware vSphere Blog: Proving Performance: Hadoop On vSphere – A Bare Metal ComparisonWhen architects think about putting big data and Apache Hadoop  on virtualized commodity servers they usually see virtualization as a performance deterrent.  Virtualization software is just that—software. In a recent performance study by VMware , they demonstrated that performance between bare-metal deployments and virtualized deployments can even exceed bare-metal performance in certain cases when using multiple…

    From the editors Virtual Desk

Hi everyone from a very wet, windy and cold Brisbane. Well to start things off I have not had any time to do much desktop work except for what I have done with customers this week. I am getting concerned that my goal to do the exam by the end of June is slipping away but other priorities take precedence.

I am sure at most of you have seen our announcement this week around hybrid cloud. There is quite a bit of info in the newsletter about this announcement.

Finally for those in the ANZ region please don't forget about virtual cloud day happening, here is the link to more info: http://bit.ly/12HROnU

Have a great week everyone and enjoy the newsletter.

    Best Wishes

VROOM!: Power Management and Performance in ESXi 5.1Powering and cooling are a substantial portion of datacenter costs. Ideally, we could minimize these costs by optimizing the datacenter’s energy consumption without impacting performance. The Host Power Management feature , which has been enabled by default since ESXi 5.0, allows hosts to reduce power consumption while boosting energy efficiency by putting processors into a low-power state when not fully utilized. Power management can be controlled by the either the BIOS or the operating system. In the…

I have decided to postpone my desktop exam for the moment as I have not had the time to setup my lab and study as much as I would like, but I still hope to give this one a go in the next month.

VMware Cloud Ops Blog: The Lowly Metric Has Its Day in the SunBy Rich Benoit Back in the day, I would have killed for a tool like vCOps, an analytics tool that uses dynamic thresholds to make sense of the myriad activity metrics that exist in an IT environment. Without dynamic thresholds that identify normal behavior, admins like myself are forced to use static thresholds that never seemed to work quite right. Static thresholds tended either to be set too low, resulting in false positives, or too high, so that by the time they were tripped, the support desk had…

vCO Team: Get Supported Hardware Versions from ClusterQuite some time ago I had the need to retrieve the supported HW versions for an environment.. I don't remember what the project was, but it wasn't terribly important so I didn't bother digging deeper to figure things out - I just worked around the issue. Last month William Lam posted an article on how to do this with PERL. In this article ( Which Virtual Hardware Versions (VM Compatibility) Are Supported In vSphere? ), William gave a simple example using a PERL script to retrieve the desired…

Also, I briefly mentioned that Multicast protocol support is required in the physical network for VXLAN to work. Before I discuss how Multicast is utilized in VXLAN deployment, I want to briefly talk about some of basics on Multicast. In the diagram below you see three main types of communication modes that are common in a network – Unicast, Broadcast and Multicast. Figure 1 Unicast mode (Fig1-A)…

VMware vSphere Blog: SIOC considerations with mixed HBA environmentsI’ve been involved in a few conversations recently related to device queue depth sizes. I must admit, this caught a few of us by surprised as we didn’t have this change documented anywhere. Anyway, various Knowledge Base articles have now been updated with this information. VMware vFabric Blog: Breaking the Mindset: Why Hadoop Can and Should Move Past Bare-Metal Deployments to VirtualizationWhenever we’ve dealt with something for a while, our way of thinking about it becomes a habit. Hadoop deals with a lot of data. Currently, the record is 100 petabytes in a Facebook cluster that analyzes log data .  Since it was built by the likes of Google and Facebook to deal with such large data volumes and performance, it originally was built to run on bare-metal servers. Since it wasn’t an option from the get-go, the notion that you can’t have that much data running on a move-able virtual machine…

Yes, as fast as it is, the speed of light imposes a speed limit. Data can only move so fast over distance and through devices that connect point A to point B.
