VMware Branch Office Desktop Whiteboard Video

This whiteboard video of the VMware® Branch Office Desktop™ details VMware's

approach to addressing multiple requirements within the branch office. With this solution IT organizations can centrally manage OS images for both physical endpoints and virtual desktop environments, while ensuring employees have fast, secure access to applications and data to maximize productivity. With centralized images and layered single image management, the same image can be deployed in a server-hosted virtual desktop, natively to a physical PC, or even on a client hypervisor.

VMware vSphere Data Protection 5.1 – integrated email notification system

VMware vSphere Data Protection 5.1 has an integrated email notification system which, once configured, may send server error and status messages to a server that is accessible to EMC, the parent company of VMware and collaborator on VDP 5.1. Some customers may consider this information to be sensitive.

All messages received have been disposed of. Future messages received from this notification system will be immediately deleted.

This KB

provides a script to disable the notification function. Customers are requested to follow the steps outlined in the KB.

October 2, 2012 Update

VMware has released a new version of vSphere Data Protection 5.1 in which the notification function is permanently disabled. Customers should upgrade to this version immediately, see the KB

for details.

Last day of week-1 for Business Process Desktop bootcamp

Here is a quick summary of the week-1 sessions:

Contact Centers Get a Boost with Cisco VXI 2.6 and VMware View

Desktop EUC Strategy View Business Process Desktop

It may be no surprise to you that over 30% of customers dealing with contact centers experience poor customer service (Forrester). Many of us have had to deal with the challenges of legacy call centers with long wait times, dropped calls and an endless tirade of prompts before we actually get to a live agent.

Cisco as the industry leader in innovative call center solutions, is transforming the agent desktop to deliver greater efficiency, agility and customer service. Cisco and VMware are partnering to take the agent desktop into the age of the unified workspace.

New VMware View Clients Simplify End User Setup

VMware recently updated the full set of VMware View Clients: Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS and Android, all available

here. New in the latest release of all VMware View clients (5.2 for Windows and 1.6 for all other clients) is support for launching the VMware View client from a URI link.

At the time of install, the View client associated itself with the URI scheme name “vmware-view://.” When a user clicks a vmware-view link, the user’s system will launch the VMware View Client. Administrators can specify many VMware View Client settings in the URI link.

Introducing the VIB Author Fling

I’m very excited to announce the new

vibauthor fling.  This fling is hot off the press and provides the capability to create custom vSphere Installation Bundles (VIBs).  Prior to this fling the VIB authoring tools were only available to VMware partners, this fling now extends this capability to everyone.

There are a couple of use cases for creating custom VIBs.  For example, if you are using Auto Deploy and you need to add a custom firewall rule to your host, or you need to make a configuration change that can’t be made using Host Profiles.

X-Large Edge Gateways and vCD

One of the outstanding enhancements provided in the vCloud Director 5.1 release was the ability to select between two different deployment models of the Edge Gateway.  It is now possible for you to deploy the Edge Gateway in a Compact or Full model, with the difference between the two being the performance they provide and the amount of resources they utilize.

Interesting Storage Stuff at VMworld 2012 Barcelona

Last month, I put together a short article on what I thought would be interesting to check out from a VMworld 2012 San Francisco perspective. On the run up to VMworld 2012 Barcelona, I thought I would do a similar post.

Disclaimer – Once again, the vSphere storage blog has to remain storage vendor neutral to retain any credibility. VMware doesn’t favour any one storage partner over another. I’m not personally endorsing any of these vendor’s products either. What I’m posting here are just a few vendors/products that are interesting to me from a storage perspective.

Have you seen the VSA 5.1 Evaluation Videos yet?

For those of you interested in a low cost shared storage solution, VMware now have a vSphere Storage Appliance (VSA). The initial release (1.0) came out last year. This year, we announced version 5.1 with a bunch of new features.

To get you started on your evaluation of the VSA 5.1, a number of evaluation videos were put together. These videos are now available on youtube. The first evaluation video, which covers the VSA 5.1 installation, is here:

Should I use das.failuredetectiontime or das.config.fdm.isolationPolicyDelaySec

Today I received a question around the use of das.failuredetectiontime and das.config.fdm.isolationPolicyDelaySec. Should you be using these advanced settings?

Short answer: no.

“vMotion without shared storage” API

My colleague

Frank Denneman recently asked me whether there was a new

vSphere API for the

new enhancement made to vMotion in vSphere 5.1, which would allow you to migrate a live running virtual machine without the need of shared storage. The simple answer is no, the new enhancement to vMotion operation has been integrated into the existing Storage vMotion API call which is the RelocateVM_Task method.

VMware Accelerate: Eight Simple Rules for Protecting My Corporate Data Assets

When my daughter was eight, she promised that she wouldn’t date boys until she was 30.  Now my daughter is 15, and it turns out that I didn’t have as much time as I’d hoped.  If you are a parent, you can probably appreciate how I feel.  We all want our children to be safe and there is no safer place for them to be than at home.  But the reality is that our children have to venture out into the real world if they are to ever grow into productive members of society.

Office of the CTO Blogs: Delivering Desktops as a Service (DaaS)

There is a lot of misinformation and FUD surrounding DaaS in the marketplace today. Some are the result of loose interpretation of licensing restrictions while others are more self-serving that the only DaaS achievable today comes in a form that a vendor has been selling for years and has decided to now attach the term ‘DaaS’ to describe it. We’ve heard all these claims and expect to hear more as the market continues to mature

We intend to dispel these myths and back it up by showing recent innovations that are making true-DaaS a reality.

VMware for Small-Medium Business Blog: Mike Laverick’s IT Hero Podcast: Virtualizing Desktops & Apps with Stu McHugh

I first met Stuart McHugh (Stu to his friends) at the London VMware User Group when I was still active on the steering committee. He’s been on my podcast the “chinwag” and he’s the co-presenter of our monthly “vNews”. In fact it was Stu’s encouragement that fired me up to start the vNews podcast after an extended sabbatical. So let that be a warning to everyone out there, if you come at me with a great idea – expect to step up to the plate and join me!  I really enjoyed chatting with Stu. As I increasingly move away from the front-line aspects of delivering systems to business, I think its ever more important to keep in touch with the “real world”. You see at times I feel I work in a media bubble of my own creation – and its important to prick that bubble at every opportunity to keep yourself grounded with what customers actually thinking, and actually implementing.

vCO Team: Create your own vCloud Download lossless vApp Template workflow in less than 5 minutes

vCloud Director 5.1 has some new features, one of them allows to keep vApp Templates information that are by default discarded. My colleague William Lam covers this very well in this

article. If you think this would be good to have this functionality as a workflow then you can have it in about 5 minutes with creating it on your own.

Office of the CTO Blogs: Big Data and Virtual Hadoop at VMworld 2012

VMworld 2012

has come and gone, and VMworld Europe is on the horizon. We had several big data oriented sessions this year, and saw a significant rise in the activity in this important area.

During the keynote, we demo’ed the next version of Serengeti

, which allows Hadoop to be elastically scaled on a virtual platform. We showed a scenario of mixed workloads on the same platform, allowing time-based shifts in the amount of resources assigned to Hadoop and other workloads. You can see the highlights from the keynote here

, and additional information on compute/data separation in an up coming blog.

Office of the CTO Blogs: HPC Performance in the Cloud: Status and Future Prospects

I spoke last week at

ISC Cloud 2012 in Mannheim, Germany about the performance of HPC applications in the cloud, citing results from several studies. I have summarized the talk below and my PDF slide deck is available

here. For full details of ISC Cloud 2012, I recommend the coverage at

HPC in the Cloud.

I gave my talk to share some specific data about HPC performance in virtual environments, but I first described what new capabilities can be gained by virtualizing an HPC environment. I felt this was necessary because in HPC discussions it is often the case that virtualization is only discussed in a negative context: how much performance is it going to cost me? That’s a legitimate question, but it is also important to understand what additional capabilities might be gained in return to do a proper cost-benefit analysis.

VCP-IaaS Exam Experiences

I just did the VCP-IaaS exam one hour ago, and wanted to share my experience right away while it is fresh in memory. I passed with a score of 409 (need 300 to pass). The Exam is 90 minute long, but I got 120 minutes because English is not my native language. During the time you have to answer 85 questions. To pass the exam you will definitely need hands on with the product. A lot of questions will ask you where in the vCloud GUI you perform certain administrative tasks. So lesson one: Know the interface. Most questions will be network related. You need to know your vCloud network by heart. External, Internal, Routed, vShield, NAT etc. need to be stuff you really know. You will also get a few questions in Chargeback. I would suggest especially looking into what default roles is present in Chargeback and what privileges they have. My best advice is to sit the vCloud, Install, Configure, Manage class. This class will be excellent for the exam.

To sum it up. Take the vCloud 4 day training class, get hands on with the product and read thoroughly on the vCloud such as pVDC, oVDC, vShield, External network etc.

The VMware Reference Architecture for Stateless Virtual Desktops on Local Solid-State Storage with VMware View 5

This document

provides the reference architecture for Stateless Virtual Desktops with VMware View 5 on local solid-state storage. A stateless desktop architecture is ideally suited for standard desktop environments where the desktop image is consistent from user to user; however with proper application design can be used in broad use cases. VMware View 5 allows specific placement of different types of disks to be re-directed, even to local storage, the I/O requirements on shared storage can be drastically reduced. The VMware View 5 Reference  Architecture for Stateless Virtual Desktops involves high-performing, solid-state drives within a physical host to offload the majority of desktop virtualization IOPS needed, while providing a stateless desktop virtualization design for planned and unplanned downtime.

Limit the amount of eggs in a single basket through vSphere 5.1 DRS

A while back I had discussion with someone and he asked me if it was possible to limit the amount of eggs in a single basket, in other words limit the amount of VMs per host. The reason this customer wanted to do this was to limit the impact of a failure. They had roughly 1500 VMs in their cluster and some hosts carried 50 VMs while other had 20 or 80. This is the nature of DRS though and totally expected.

VMware View Naming Pattern

Administrators can provision the desktops in an automated pool by manually specifying a list of desktop names or by providing a naming pattern and the number of desktops they want in the pool. These two approaches offer different advantages.

If you name desktops by specifying a list, you can use your company’s naming scheme, and you can associate each desktop name with a user. If you provide a naming pattern, View Manager can dynamically create and assign desktops as users need them.

DRS Best Practices, Advanced Concepts and Future Directions

VMware DRS is one of the best features of VMware vSphere. It gives you the possibility to automate the management of resources in virtual environments. There is quite a few parameters which one must take into consideration, but there is quite a lot when DRS can help you out. Like the automatic initial placement of VMs and load-balancing, depending on the load of a host, cpu utilization and ressource pools.

Configuring VXLAN…

Yesterday I got an email about configuring VXLAN. I was in the middle of re-doing my lab so I figured this would be a nice exercise. First I downloaded vShield Manager and migrated from regular virtual switches to a Distributed Switch environment. I am not going to go in to any depth around how to do this, this is fairly straight forward. Just right click the Distributed Switch and select “Add and Manage Hosts” and follow the steps. If you wondering what the use-case for VXLAN would be I recommend

reading Massimo’s post.

VMware vCloud 5.1 Networking for dummies

In April of this year I finally was able to take the “

VMware vCloud: Deploy and Manage the VMware Cloud“ course lead by

Mr. Eric Sloof himself. The training was based on vCloud Director 1.5 and I learned quite a lot and really thought I had this vCloud networking thing in my fingers. The exercises in class where easy to complete and made sense to me. Ok, Ok, I do admit I was sometimes struggling with the fact that I knew what I wanted to configure but didn’t always know where to configure it. Like creating a NAT rule to a static IP or opening some firewall ports. But in the end, it all worked. At home I didn’t get the time to play with vCloud and when I finally did get time, vCloud Director 5.1 was just released.

VXLAN requirements

When I was writing my “

Configuring VXLAN” post I was trying to dig up some details around VXLAN requirements and recommendations to run a full “VMware” implementation. Unfortunately I couldn’t find much, or at least not a single place with all the details. I figured I would gather all I can find and throw it in to a single post to make it easier for everyone.

Making a vCloud multi VM vApp template

As you’ve read by now I’m making my first steps into vCloud Director 5.1 and stumble across some simple things. One of these is the quest on how to create a multi VM vApp template. Had been searching for this and was afraid it wasn’t even possible, but luckily it is possible, you just have to look where you don’t expect it to be
